Friday was the launch of Facebook's highly anticipated IPO, finishing the day with a mere 23 cents a share gain , suggesting a cooler-than-expected reception. Rather then focusing on the news of the newly minted billionaires in Northern California, the "Real News" panel opened Friday discussing the action of Sens. Chuck Schumer and Bob Casey in Washington D.C., who have introduced legislation that would seek to tax Ex-patriot millionaires and billionaires at a 30 percent capital gains rate based on the highly publicized citizenship withdrawal of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Saverin is taking up residence in Singapore, a country without a capital gains tax, making a move that will potentially save him $67 million dollars in taxes. There’s a lot of outrage over what many see as a tax dodge, but Saverin points out he does have to pay a 15% exit tax. The Washington Post reports on what will go into the "ex-PATRIOT Act:" Under the proposal, “any expatriate with either a net worth of $2 million or an average income tax liability of at least $148,000 over the last five years will be presumed to have renounced their citizenship for tax avoidance purposes,” according to a release from Schumer’s office, and they would pay 30 percent capital gains tax — the same rate as people pay in the U.S. If an expatriate can prove he or she has a legitimate reason for renouncing U.S. citizenship, no penalties will apply. The bill would tax any prospective gains an expatriate who has renounced his or her citizenship in the past ten years who did so for purposes of tax avoidance. In Saverin’s case, Schumer spokesman Brian Fallows said that if the Facebook co-founder liquidates all his holdings in the company before the bill is passed, he will escape penalty. However, if he takes his time selling off his assets, for the purpose of letting it grow and then seeks to sell off and he would pay 30 percent on those earnings. According to Schumer’s office, 1,780 people gave up their citizenship in 2011, a rise from 235 in 2008. Some argue though that the legislation goes too far by harming the U.S.' pro-business global reputation, and forwards un-American sentiments. A recent column in The Wall Street Journal makes sure to acknowledge that the editorial board does not have any sympathy for Saverin, but believes the suggested legislation appeals to "the age of envy" and is a move by senators who "hope to score political points by punishing the fleeing rich who will strike most Americans as unpatriotic." Whatever Mr. Saverin's motivation, the more important point is that it is his decision, however misguided. America was built on millions of similar individual decisions to come to our shores. It is precisely that ability to decide for oneself that has made America such a magnet for two centuries. The way to continue to be a magnet for the best and brightest is not to impose Soviet-style exit taxes to punish people who want to leave the country. That is what oppressive and demagogic regimes do, and it's humiliating to see U.S. Senators posture in such fashion. The way to punish Mr. Saverin is to make the U.S. so appealing and dynamic again that he'll be sorry he ever left. Will Cain had some strong feelings towards the ex-American during the opening segment of "Real News" Friday. "Eduardo Saverin is an ass" said Cain Friday. With that in mind though, Will took agreement with many of the points in the Wall Street Journal column, questioning whether the punishment sets a more negative precedent than Saverin's action. S.E. Cupp commented that the story gives further evidence that lawmakers should work to make the United States a more attractive place for entreprenuers and business leaders, who would in turn want to stay here.

Okay, okay, we promise we’ll take a break from Elizabeth Warren stories -- but we really have to do this one last report. The Blaze reported on Wednesday that the Massachusetts senatorial candidate has offered some pretty flimsy evidence to prove her Cherokee Indian heritage. One of the weaker proofs she has offered is the fact that her cousin Candy Rowsey once edited an obscure 1984 cookbook titled “Pow Wow Chow.” Then The Blaze reported yesterday that the former “Native American” Harvard Law professor actually contributed five recipes to said cookbook. The book also bills her as a Cherokee. Image courtesy Buzzfeed And just in time for the weekend, we bring you the latest in the continuing saga of “ fauxcahontas ”: Warren didn’t just contribute to the cookbook, but she may have even plagiarized a couple of the recipes, Breitbart’s Michael Patrick Leahy reports. “The credibility of Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren took another hit today as Boston radio talk show host Howie Carr released evidence that appears to confirm Ms. Warren may have plagiarized at least three of the five recipes,” Leahy writes. But which recipes did she allegedly rip-off and where’s the proof? You see, unlike Warren’s Cherokee heritage claims, allegation of this sort have to be backed up with something a bit more concrete than, say, “ family lore. ” So where's the proof? “The two recipes, ‘Cold Omelets with Crab Meat’ and ‘Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing,’ appear in an article titled ‘Cold Omelets with Crab Meat,’ written by Pierre Franey of the New York Times News Service that was published in the August 22, 1979 edition of the Virgin Islands Daily News ,” Leahy reports. The "Pow Wow Chow" recipe for "Cold Omelets with Crab Meat" contains "all four of the ingredients listed in Mr. Franey’s 1979 recipe in the exact same portion but lists five additional ingredients," Leahy points out. Here are Franey's recipes as they appeared in 1979 . "More significantly," he adds, "her instructions are virtually a word for word copy of Mr. Franey’s instructions from this 1979 article." Here are Warren's recipes as they appear in "Pow Wow Chow." (Images courtesy: Boston Herald ) Huh. That’s weird. According to “Pow Wow Chow,” all the recipes were passed down through generations of Oklahoma Native American members of the Cherokee tribe. Yet, somehow, it appears two of the recipes may have originated at Le Pavilion, “a fabulously expensive French restaurant in Manhattan,” as Leahy describes it. But perhaps the bigger question here is this: where, exactly, did 19th-century Cherokee Indians all the way out in the plains of Oklahoma acquire a taste for Worcestershire sauce and "imported mustard"? But wait! There’s more! Warren's " Herbed Tomatoes " recipe may have been copied from a 1959 Better Homes and Garden recipe , according to Leahy. “Ms. Warren ‘s campaign has not commented on the suggestion that she may have plagiarized her recipe contributions to the Pow Wow Chow cookbook,” the Breitbart article adds. “Sales of the Pow Wow Chow have heated up on Amazon since this controversy began, vaulting from a lowly 1.2 million ranking book to number 11,289 early this morning." Okay. As promised, we're done with Warren stories for now (or until she does something else that makes us laugh). (H/T: Washington Free Beacon )

For those of you who have been following the increasingly laughable dust-up over Elizabeth Warren's shoddy academic performance and dubious Cherokee Heritage, the story has just gotten both more absurd and more serious. Why? Because it turns out that along with her plagiarism of recipes for the "Pow Wow Chow" cookbook, Warren has plagiarized in an area where academic standards, or at least journalistic standards, are arguably in force - namely, in writing a book of Financial Advice. National Review's Katrina Trinko has reported that sections of Warren's 2006 book "All Your Worth: The Ultimate Money Lifetime Plan" appear to be lifted directly from the 2005 book "Getting on the Money Truck" by Rob Black. Compare these passages from Warren's book: In fact, more than 80 million Americans now owe money on a credit card. And not just a little bit of money: The average family that carries a balance now owes more than two months’ income on their credit cards. A generation or two ago, almost no one carried any debt except for a home mortgage and maybe a car loan . There were no giant credit card balances, no payday loans, and no home equity loans. In fact, just 35 years ago, the total amount of debt outstanding among all American households was about 1/600th of what it is today. That means that for every dollar your generation owes today, your parents’ generation owed less than half a penny! With these passages from Black's: In fact, more than 80 million Americans now owe money on a credit card. And not just a little bit of money: The average family carrying a balance now owes more than two months of income on their credit cards. A generation or two ago, almost no one carried any debt except for a home mortgage and maybe a car loan. There were no giant credit card balances , no payday loans (watch out for these as they end to charge 10 percent or more for the right to your own money), and no home equity loans. In fact, just 35 years ago, the total amount of debt outstanding among all American households was about 1/600th of what it is today. That means that for every dollar your generation owes today, your grandparents’ generation owed less than half a penny! The Black passages, as you can see, are virtually identical with the passages from Warren's book. And full context doesn't do Warren any favors - she gives attribution to Black nowhere in the relevant pages. This revelation calls more into question than Warren's alleged "minority" status. It also calls into question her entire vaunted academic record, which has been one of her main selling points in running for Senate in Massachusetts. Much as Massachusetts residents might be inclined to vote for people who, like Warren, have connections to their oldest university (Harvard), it is highly questionable whether they will want to vote for someone who may have cheated her way into that university and kept cheating while hired. This is going to be a long, tough election for Elizabeth Warren.

Important talks among the world's leaders will take place in the United States this weekend as the G8 summit will be held Friday evening at Camp David and the NATO summit will take place in Chicago Sunday and Monday. The president will need to step up and make his mark at these meetings for The Washington Times reports that there are "increasing signs that the world is tuning his message out:" Russian President Vladimir Putin is skipping the G-8 meeting that begins Friday at Camp David, Md., a startling display of disrespect for Mr. Obama, foreign policy analysts say. The just-elected Mr. Putin has said he needs time to put his Cabinet of advisers together, dispatching Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to the U.S. as his surrogate. French voters gave the bum’s rush this month to Mr. Obama’s ally, President Nicolas Sarkozy, in favor of socialist Francois Hollande, who campaigned in part on a pledge to withdraw France’s 3,400 troops fromAfghanistan sooner than Mr. Obama desires. Then there’s the European debt crisis, which only has deepened since Mr. Obama urged the Continent’s leaders to solve their problems last November at a conference in France. But U.S. officials have been largely sidelined in the European debate, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, head of the eurozone’s most powerful economy, embracing a policy of economic austerity largely opposed in Washington. At the Camp David summit, observers say, Mr. Obama will have little leverage over Europe’s fiscal emergency, while the economic slowdown across the Atlantic still could engulf the United States before the November elections. A major topic of discussion expected for the weekend is an issue that the "Real News" panel has discussed at the length; Syria. Syrian opposition forces have just begun to receive significantly more and better weapons in recent weeks paid for by Persian Gulf nations and coordinated in part by the United States. With this news indicating that the U.S. is no longer on the sidelines, what is President Obama going to do moving forward beginning this weekend, and might he be hamstrung by the growing international perception that he is ineffective as a leader? Tony Badran from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies joined the panel Friday to answer these questions as well as discuss a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed from former President George W. Bush questioning that if America does not support the advance of democratic institutions and values, who will?

[caption id="attachment_317284" align="alignright" width="311" caption="WJBK-TV"] [/caption] Detroit police told groundskeeper John Chevilott he did the right thing by turning over a loaded handgun he found on the job earlier this month. His Wayne County employers had a different opinion: They fired him for it. Chevilott and his crew were mowing county property in Westland, Mich. when they came across a snubnosed revolver on the morning of May 3. "It was damaged, so it could've went off. Surprisingly, it didn't kill the guy on the mower," Chevilott told WJBK-TV . "It got picked up, so we put it in the van, waited [for] police to drive by." But when police didn't come by, Chevilott finished up his workday and drove the gun to the station himself. Officers ran a check and discovered it had been stolen in 2005. "They said I did the right thing getting it off the street," he said. It seems his superiors in Michigan's public works department disagreed. They gave the foreman who had been in charge a 30-day suspension, and fired Chevilott after 23 years of service. A Wayne County spokeswoman told WJBK the rules are clear: Employees aren't allowed to possess weapons on the job. But Chevilott said that policy doesn't apply; he didn't bring the gun -- he found it. "I've never seen a policy what to do if we find a gun out here. So, all I did was secure the situation to make sure nobody else got hurt or killed," he said. Chevilott -- who was also let go for insubordination and unauthorized access to the road yard -- wants his job back and has enlisted the help of his local union president. Thomas Richards told WJBK the situation is simple: "They did a good thing. They took a gun off the streets and they're being punished."

Rankin Paynter, who runs a jewelery exchange in Winchester, told WLEX-TV he was at the superstore two days before it was set to shut its doors. Wondering what was going to happen with everything left on the shelves, he got an idea: Buy it all and give it to those in need. Four cash registers and six-and-a-half hours later, Paynter walked away with a $200,000 haul -- even renting a building to store everything. "What I see is people coming in my store, needy people sell their stuff," Paynter said. "It's bad nowadays. I just told (the clerk) let's just give it away to charity." Judy Crowe of Clark County Community Services said it will be the first year they've had enough hats, coats and gloves for all the children they serve.
Earlier this month The Blaze published part one of the Heritage Foundation 's three-part video series during “Protect America Month 2012,” profiling stories of courage that showcase why we must commit to protecting the United States in an increasingly dangerous world. In the first video, Iraq War veteran Col. Kerry Kachejian described making his way around Iraq at the height of the raging insurgency while driving in an unarmored SUV. The latest video features David A. Deptula, a retired three-star general, describing how fiscal contraints on the Department of Defense have left fighter jets in service more than twice as long as orignal designed for. A close example for Deptula is the F-15 he flew himself for the first time in 1977, that his son Lt. David A. Deptula II now flies at Kadena Air Force Base in Japan. "We have really flown these aircraft well beyond what originally would be believed as their replacement lifetime,” Deptula said of the F-15s. “And now, because of some of the fiscal constraints that are being imposed on the Department of Defense, there is consideration being given to extending the lifetime even further.” Fiscal constraints like the $492 billion of mandatory defense cuts on the horizon . “I hear people talk about, well you know, the U.S. military spends more money than the next 17 nations combined,” Deptula said. “Well, the next 17 nations combined are not committed to maintaining peace and stability around the world. We are.” The president’s final budget request of his first term calls for $1.2 trillion in automatic 10-year spending cuts, half of which come from military programs, to kick in next January unless the White House and Congress agree to alternative savings. On Friday House Republicans voted to authorize $642.5 billion in defense and war spending next year , defying the president's veto threat by exceeding his budget's Pentagon funding request by several billion dollars.
[caption id="attachment_317043" align="alignright" width="240" caption="William Peter Blatty (AP)"] [/caption] First, Georgetown University brought us Sandra Fluke . Now, the higher educational facility, which has been catching flack of late for perceived anti-Catholic bias (which is ironic, because it's a Catholic university ), may be at the center of an epic "legal" battle. In an intriguing set of circumstances, William Peter Blatty, the Academy Award Winner and author of "The Exorcist," is leading the charge against the institution. ( Related: ‘Scandalous & Outrageous’: Catholics Angry Over HHS Sec. Sebelius’ Georgetown Commencement Invite ) Blatty, who graduated from the university in 1950, is angry over Georgetown's refusal to comply with Catholic teaching. The Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) provides more information on the potential canon lawsuit that seems to be gaining steam: Georgetown University alumni, students and others are preparing a canon law suit to be filed with the Archdiocese of Washington and the Vatican, seeking remedies “up to and including the possible removal or suspension of top-ranked Georgetown’s right to call itself Catholic or Jesuit in its fundraising and representations to applicants.” The effort is being led by the distinguished Georgetown alumnus William Peter Blatty, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay and book The Exorcist and has been honored by Georgetown with its John Carroll Medal for alumni achievement. Blatty is urging Georgetown alumni, students, parents, faculty and anyone associated with Georgetown to join the lawsuit at www.gupetition.org . The website includes an inspiring letter by Blatty and a description of Georgetown’s historical ties to the Jesuits, the Washington Archdiocese and the Vatican. In a letter posted on the petition's web site, Blatty makes the reasons for his opposition to Georgetown's Catholic title known. The famed writer claims that the university has refused to align itself with John Paul II's Ex corde Ecclesiaie (a Catholic Constitution for universities) and, thus, canon law. [caption id="attachment_160849" align="aligncenter" width="601" caption="Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (AP)"] [/caption] Considering the school's many purportedly anti-Catholic scandals, including its recent commencement invite to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Blatty is taking a firm stance . In his note, he asks others to join him in making Georgetown "honest, Catholic and better." He writes : In the months to come, The Father King Society will ask Georgetown and the Church for explanations and decisions. In 1991, in an effort led by courageous Georgetown students, my dearly missed classmate, GU Law Center Prof. Richard Alan Gordon, took the awesome step of submitting a canon law petition asking the Church to remove Georgetown’s right to call itself Catholic. Then Dean of Students John J. DeGioia had authorized the funding of a pro-abortion student advocacy group. A contemporaneous secret memorandum from the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities to the presidents of all Jesuit institutions showed us that Dr. DeGioia’s decision was part of a larger scheme: GU was to be the dissident leader for others to follow. Dean Gordon’s effort was provocative and drastic, but within months of the filing, Rome required Georgetown to reverse itself, and Georgetown did. We may choose to file a canon action again, one much larger in scale and seeking alternative forms of relief that will include, among others, that Georgetown’s right to call itself Catholic and Jesuit be revoked or suspended for a time. We will ask for lesser relief as well. Of course, what we truly seek is for Georgetown to have the vision and courage to be Catholic but clearly the slow pastoral approach has not worked.

Will Smith received a rather unpleasant surprise today while on the Red Carpet at the Moscow Premiere of "Men in Black 3." Apparently, press customs in Eastern Europe are different, and one male Ukrainian reporter whose shtick it is to kiss celebrities thought it would be a good idea to try to lay one on Smith. Conflict ensued: As you can plainly see, the Ukrainian got off light. Smith says near the end, "He's lucky I didn't sucker punch him." TMZ gives this post-script to the bizarre incident: We're told the dude who kissed Will is a television reporter who often kisses celebrities -- it's his schtick. For the record, Will just came out in support of gay marriage. A source on scene tells TMZ, the reporter's mouth brushed up against Will's and that's why the actor reacted so violently. Despite the incident, Will stayed positive ... and happily continued to sign autographs for fans and do red carpet interviews. H/T: TheRightScoop
