The Politics of Passion

On August 13, 2011, in barack obama, Uncategorized, by kohler

Ames, Iowa — Michele Bachmann had an event this evening scheduled for 8:30. At 9:10, her bus has just now pulled up. (Speakers from the Values Bus, a joint effort of the Family Research Council, Susan B. Anthony List, and National Organization for Marriage, killed some time warming up the crowd.) But by 8:00, there were already almost as many people waiting for Bachmann as there were at the Pawlenty event I wrote about earlier at its peak. There will be free food here later, but that’s not why these people showed up. They’re here to see Bachmann, and when a campaign staffer asked who wanted to volunteer first thing in the morning to help transport people to the straw poll, a lot of them raised their hands. Bachmann hasn’t built as well-oiled campaign machine like Pawlenty (and her lateness is a symptom of that), but she may not need to. Pawlenty’s campaign looks like an organization trying to grind out votes one by one. Bachmann’s looks like one that is organically develping self-perpetuating support through the strength of her fans’ passion. Maybe I’ll change my mind when I see the crowd here tomorrow, but right now it’s hard for me to believe that Bachmann won’t leave Pawlenty in the dust.

RomneyCare, global warming, and now abortion: How is this guy leading in the polls? Here’s Mitt talking up his pro-choice views when he ran for governor of Massachusetts: (Politico) — Five Republican presidential candidates have signed a pledge to advance the anti-abortion movement if elected to the White House, but the current front runner for the 2012 GOP nomination — Mitt Romney — isn’t one of them. Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty and Rick Santorum each signed the pledge, sponsored by Susan B. Anthony List, vowing to nominate judges and appoint executive branch officials who are opposed to abortion. The pledge also commit signers to push legislation to end all taxpayer funding of abortion and to sign a law to “protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion.” Mitt Romney, who’s leading in national and early state opinion polls, declined to sign. “Governor Romney pledged in the last campaign that he would be a pro-life president and of course he pledges it today,” said spokeswoman Andrea Saul in a statement. “However, this well-intentioned effort has some potentially unforeseen consequences and he does not feel he could in good conscience sign it. Gov. Romney has been a strong supporter of the SBA List in the past and he looks forward to continue working with them to promote a culture of life.” The pledge calls for legislation to defund Planned Parenthood — already a rallying point for the social conservative movement — and to cut funding to “all other contractors and recipients of federal funds with affiliates that perform or fund abortions.”

Romney Only GOP Candidate Who Refused To Sign Anti-Abortion Pledge That Seeks To Defund Planned Parenthood…

Earlier today, I mocked a $200,000 ad campaign from taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood denouncing any cuts in federal funding from Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, the Susan B. Anthony List will be running a “four-day $75,000 television and online ad buy throughout NY-25 and the Syracuse-area thanking Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle for standing up for women, young girls and taxpayers with her vote to defund Planned Parenthood.” Of course, the Susan B. Anthony List doesn't take a dime from taxpayers.
