-By Warner Todd Huston In 2007 when Barack Obama was running for President the first time there was a controversy raging over whether U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez was right to accede to President Bush’s order to fire a handful of U.S. attorneys. Obama then criticized the AG for politicizing the office. Flash forward to 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama left plenty of ambiguity in new policy guidelines that he says will restrict how and when the U.S. can launch targeted drone strikes, leaving himself significant power over how and when the weapons can be deployed.

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona’s bitter debate over a signature part of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul has sparked an investigation into lawmakers’ safety after at least nine legislators received a threatening email over Gov. Jan Brewer’s push to expand Medicaid access.

Senate Judiciary Committee member Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., joins other members of the committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Monday, May 20, 2013, as lawmakers work on a landmark immigration bill to secure the border and offer citizenship to millions. The panel is aiming to pass the legislation out of committee this week, setting up a high-stakes debate on the Senate floor. Credit: AP Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) had some strong words for President Barack Obama over his decision to meet with illegal aliens after refusing to sit down with the union representing immigration officers. In a statement to Fox News on Friday, Sessions said Obama’s decision to host the illegal immigrants after snubbing immigration officers “says it all.” “The White House will not even grant ICE officers a low-level White House meeting but invites illegal immigrants into the Oval Office,” the senator added. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden reportedly med with eight pro-amnesty advocates at the White House on Tuesday. Three of the visitors were listed as having received “deferred action.” In other words, they were likely granted reprieve via Obama’s 2012 executive order that allows some illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to avoid deportation. Meanwhile, the ICE union has been attempting, unsuccessfully, to sit down with the president for three months to talk about immigration reform. On Thursday, Sessions and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) sent a letter to the White House asking why it has not responded to repeat meeting requests from the National ICE Council, which represents upwards of 7,000 immigration officers. “To be effective any immigration reform bill must heed the warnings from our federal immigration agents,” the letter states. “Unfortunately, far from being included in the process, ICE officers have been shut out and have even had their day-to-day operations handcuffed by DHS officials to the point of being unable to carry out their sworn duties.”

Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin gained notoriety during the Bush (43) years for her rowdy protests of the war on terror. She’s so associated with the loud anti-war movement that some people wondered how she was even able to get into President Obama ‘s counter-terrorism speech at the National Defense University Thursday. Sitting in the audience, Benjamin several times interrupted the speech to call on Obama to close Guantanamo Bay Prison. How’d she get in? By pretending to be with the news media, according to the Washington Post : In a statement, the university explained that Benjamin “was given access via the list of media attendees expected.” @eScarry Related: Was Code Pink heckler actually invited to Obama’s speech? **Written by Doug Powers Long live the honor system . I’ll go out on a limb and predict that Eric Holder’s comprehensive review will conclude that Eric Holder’s department acted appropriately if not heroically. However, in the name of respecting the privacy of journalists, the DOJ may acquiesce by agreeing to redact entire numbers from phone records they seized before releasing the information in the future: President Obama, responding to mounting criticism of his Justice Department’s seizure of reporter records, said for the first time Thursday that the administration would be reviewing its guidelines in response to the controversy. Obama said he’s “troubled” by the developments and that journalists should not be “at legal risk” for doing their jobs. Not only did the department secretly obtain two months of phone records from the Associated Press, but it seized phone records from several Fox News lines — and labeled one correspondent a criminal “co-conspirator” in its successful effort to seize his personal emails. Obama, in a Washington address, said he’s asked Attorney General Eric Holder to review the department’s “guidelines governing investigations that involve reporters” and report back by July 12. He said Holder will convene a group of media organizations to hear their concerns. Obama then said any concerned members of the media desiring an invitation to meet with Holder need only mention it the next time they’re talking on the phone to their parents . Just kidding … I think. The latest on the man in charge of the department now being asked to investigate itself: Attorney General Eric Holder signed off on a controversial search warrant that identified Fox News reporter James Rosen as a “possible co-conspirator” in violations of the Espionage Act and authorized seizure of his private emails, a law enforcement official told NBC News on Thursday. The disclosure of the attorney general’s role came as President Barack Obama, in a major speech on his counterterrorism policy, said Holder had agreed to review Justice Department guidelines governing investigations that involve journalists. By Tabassum Zakaria and Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) – New U.S. guidelines for conducting armed drone operations overseas set a higher bar for attacking non-Americans and could reduce controversial “signature strikes” targeted at suspicious groups rather than individuals. But the drone guidelines announced by President Barack Obama on Thursday still include vague language and loopholes that officials could use to conduct more expansive operations. …

By Matt Spetalnick and Roberta Rampton WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Thursday shifted the United States away from a “boundless global war on terror,” restricting deadly drone strikes abroad and signaling that America's long struggle against al Qaeda will one day end. In a major policy speech, Obama narrowed the scope of the U.S. targeted-killing campaign against al Qaeda and its allies and took new steps toward closing the Guantanamo Bay military prison – controversial elements of the U.S. counterterrorism fight that have drawn condemnation at home and abroad. …
