Obama’s Green Robber Barons
Obama’s Green Robber Barons by Michelle Malkin Creators Syndicate Copyright 2012 Had enough of fat cat Barack Obama, his jet-setting wife and his multi-millionaire Chicago consigliere/real-estate mogul Valerie Jarrett attacking the “rich”? Well, brace yourselves. You’ll be hearing much more from the White House about the “wealthy few” who aren’t paying their “fair share” as Obama’s re-election campaign doubles down on class-war demagoguery. As usual, there’s always a set of immunity charms for the privileged friends and family of the ruling class. When it comes to all the Green Robber Barons who’ve reaped an obscenely unfair share of billions of tax dollars from the Obama administration, the envy trumpeteers will be quieter than a nest of mute church mice. Obama’s State of the Union address defiantly pitched a new round of clean energy spending orgies to help the “middle class.” But how have the serial bankruptcies and near-bankruptcies of several federally subsidized solar companies — all under Obama’s watch — helped anyone but an upper-crust elite of eco-crats and their lobbyists and consultants? Bankrupt Solyndra, billionaire George Kaiser. In the wake of the half-billion-dollar Solyndra stimulus bust, company officials revealed plans to hand out hefty bonuses totaling $500,000. Months before the politically connected solar energy manufacturer went belly up, it was doling out bonus payments of between $40,000 and $60,000 to several executives. Last week, a local CBS News crew caught employees at the Silicon Valley headquarters trashing solar panel glass tubes worth an estimated $10 million. The now-abandoned Taj Mahal complex cost ordinary Americans more than $733 million. But billionaire Democratic donor and frequent White House guest George Kaiser, whose nonprofit foundation was Solyndra’s biggest investor, is still sitting pretty. He and the other private investors of Solyndra will recoup their losses ahead of taxpayers. And while they blast their GOP opponents, double-standard Democrats will remain AWOL on the glaring tax-avoidance strategies of the wealthy Kaiser Family Foundation. Bankrupt Beacon Power, fat Democratic coffers. This green energy storage plant filed for bankruptcy last fall after a $43 million injection of Obama Department of Energy loan guarantees. Federal election record filings show that CEO William Capp contributed to the 2008 Obama campaign, as well as several left-wing New England Democratic candidates. Beacon Power lobbyist Steve Wolfe was a former aide to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy. Beacon sought bankruptcy shelter two days after the White House responded to fiscal watchdogs’ demands for a review of the DOE’s shoddy loan monitoring programs. Bankrupt SpectraWatt, red-faced Goldman Sachs. A solar cell company based in New York, SpectraWatt went belly up last August despite a half-million-dollar federal stimulus boost and lucrative backing from politically connected Goldman Sachs — whose ties reach deep into the Obama Treasury Department, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, White House National Economic Council and 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. itself. The eco-failure was dumped in a fire sale for less than $5 million. Teetering Nevada Geothermal, cheerleading Harry Reid. Despite $150 million in federal DOE and Treasury Department subsidies — not to mention personal lobbying by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — this alternative energy project is on the brink of failure. A Deloitte and Touche audit grimly concludes that the company “has incurred net losses over the past several years, has an accumulated deficit of $44.0 million and an anticipated inability to retire its long-term liabilities.” According to CBS News, the company’s latest SEC filings warn of multiple defaults. My scouring of White House visitor logs shows nine visits from another Green Robber Baron, Illinois-based Exelon’s CEO John Rowe, who met with the president and former chief of staff Rahm Emanuel multiple times. As Forbes magazine reported: The clean energy company “has very deep ties to the Obama Administration. Frank M. Clark, who runs ComEd, helped advise Obama before he ran for president and is one of Obama’s largest fundraisers. Obama’s chief political strategist, David Axelrod, worked as a consultant to Exelon. Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, helped create Exelon” — where he raked in more than $16 million over two years. Remember: “Fairness” is in the eye of the wealth redistributors.

Obama, Clinton show up in ‘The Dictator’ preview
Actor Sacha Baron Cohen punked Ron Paul in 2009 in his movie “Bruno.” He did the same to Newt Gingrich in 2007, though Cohen was acting as his character “Ali G,” rather than Bruno. And now a trailer for a new movie titled “The Dictator” from Cohen features Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama . Unfortunately they’re only technically in the trailer for “The Dictator.” No actual acting was involved and they weren’t punked like Paul or Gingrich. Video footage from statements Obama and Clinton made about Saddam Hussein were used to make it appear as though they’re talking about Cohen’s character, a Middle Eastern tyrant named General Aladeen . The movie is set for release next May. Watch: h/t Daily Mail

‘TAX THE RICH’ Chant From Dems Haunts NY Gov
Is a huge Wisconsin-style revolt brewing in the Empire State? New York has unsustainable, long-term obligations to huge public employee pension funds as well as new governor who has talked bluntly about the need for layoffs across the board, and draconian budget cuts. With his talk of reigning in government spending and asking unions for concessions in pay and benefits, New York’s newly elected Gov. Cuomo has sounded more like NJ’s Chris Christie than his father Mario Cuomo. Apparently some of his fellow Democrats are feeling that way too. Andrew Cuomo’s plan for fixing the state’s massive budget shortfall includes talk of many layoffs, cuts across the board, but no extension of the so-called millionaire’s tax that expires at the end of 2011. Outspoken NYC Councilman Charles Baron (D-Brooklyn) wants no cuts, no layoffs and more taxes on the highest earners. And he is not shy about it. Sunday night in Albany, the Governor was speaking to the state’s Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators. What should have been a friendly place for a Democrat, turned hostile as Cuomo had to deal with a heckling Charles Barron, a New York City Council member from Brooklyn. The former Black Panther turned activist/politician broke into the governor’s speech with shouts of; “Shame on you!” and “Stop the cuts!” Gov. Cuomo, like his father, did not back down from a challenge, replying; “How are you tonight Charles? I can’t see who it is, but I know who it is.” At that point, the Brooklyn-based City Councilman had the opening he needed and started leading the crowd of 500, chanting; “TAX THE RICH! TAX THE RICH!” Cuomo was forced to shout over the disgruntled democrats, ironically letting them know that they will not be divided. The Governor was also quick to let the attending members of the Press know that he believes his plan is correct, pointing to his current sky-high poll numbers; “If you take that barometer, then you would say people accept the budget that I put out.” The entire story is covered in the first two minutes of the attached clip.

Understanding Egypt: The danger of revolution on an empty stomach
Editor’s note: The Blaze is featuring some guest posts to help our readers gain a deeper understanding of the situation in Egypt. This post, by The Wilkow Majority’s Nick Rizzuto, looks at the effects of food prices and hunger on societal revolutions. The events unfolding in Egypt have confounded commentators across the political spectrum. Despite the best efforts of analysts, credible predictions as to the political future of Egyptian society remain elusive, usually appearing to be little less than educated guesses or, at worst, partisan talking points. Some are convinced that the demonstrations will lead to the establishment of a new liberal state, while others rightly fear the grim specter of the rise of a new Islamist state under the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood. While a great deal of attention has been paid to the various ideologies of the political factions at play, just as important are the conditions that underlie Egypt’s current revolutionary fervor. A recent report might give us some insight as to the social backdrop upon which the Egyptian unrest is occurring. Last week the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization announced that the Food Price Index rose for the 7th consecutive month. For various reasons including American monetary policy and increasing global demand, the prices of corn, soybeans, sugar, livestock, and other vital foodstuffs have risen to highs in recent months that haven’t been seen since 2008 when food prices had previously peaked. These high food prices, along with persistent unemployment, have put a strain on Middle Eastern regimes and are undoubtedly contributing to growing regional unrest. While this fact can hardly allow us to foresee the future of Egypt with any certainty, it does allow us to draw historical parallels. One of the most notable analogous events in history, one that saw political upheaval alongside a populace struggling to feed itself, was the French Revolution. The decade leading up to the French Revolution saw massive crop failures and food shortages. Double-digit inflation in the price of food became commonplace with price of food inflating by 67% in 1789 alone. The Revolution’s first manifestations were so-called bread riots in urban France as peasants, motivated by their hunger, took to the streets in orgies of looting and property destruction. It was under these conditions that the French people all but overthrew the monarchy of King Louis XVI. The National Assembly, France’s first democratic assembly, drafted and adopted The Declaration of the Rights of Man, a statement of principle not unlike the United States Declaration of Independence. Following this, the Assembly adopted France’s first written constitution. Despite having succeeded in establishing the foundations of a liberal society, food shortages persisted. When the people demanded that this problem, along with others, be confronted, France’s National assembly created the Committee for Public Safety, which would come to be fronted by radical Maximilian Robespierre. Under the Committee of Public Safety between 1793 and 1794, the French Revolution began consuming itself. The committee’s reactionary response to conspiracies “against the public liberty and general safety”, both real and imagined, gave rise to what would become known as the Reign of Terror, leading to bloody excesses that sapped the revolution of what moral authority it had once held. As many as 40,000 French citizens went to the scaffolds and met their end at the guillotine. It wasn’t until Robespierre himself met his fate that calm returned to France. Even still, the disorder and discontent in post-revolutionary France was seized upon Napoleon Bonaparte, culminating in one of history’s most destructive dictatorships. Despite having enlightenment ideas at its ideological center, it was its empty belly that led the revolution to abandon its moral compass. Many of the ideas behind the French revolution were the same as those that inspired Americas founders. For example, the Baron De Montesquieu’s concept of limiting concentration of state power were a favorite of the radical Jacobins, while John Locke’s concepts of popular sovereignty and natural rights were at the core of France’s revolution. Similarly in Egypt, those currently taking to the streets might have the best of intentions, but even the most liberal of political factions will eventually have to answer to hungry citizens, who will turn in desperation to whomever can keep them feed. While the Muslim Brotherhood might represent a political minority (one commentator suggests that they might only receive as little as 20% of the vote of a democratic election were held today), it is by far the most organized opposition political faction within Egypt. It’s global scope and access to resources will allow them to exploit any post-revolutionary chaos in a way other political factions within Egypt cannot. This includes inflated food prices that are almost sure to continue no matter who controls Egypt following the abdication of President Hosni Mubarak. As global food prices continue skywards, we are likely to see continued unrest. When analyzing this upheaval, we must take care to remember that while it is important to understand what is at the heart of the revolution, we must not overlook what is in its stomach.
