A few days late on this one, but it’s worth posting for the sheer stupidity of it all. At London’s Daily Mail , ” Man dies after eating cocaine from his brother’s butt to help hide evidence while the pair were in the back of police car .” There’s video at the link. I’m not embedding these stupid freakin’ idiots.

Ron Paul Walks Out of CNN Interview

On December 22, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Barry Munz

You know, Gloria Borger’s been in the business a long time, and she’s not haranguing the candidate. And she’s apologetic as he pulls the microphone off of his lapel. But Paul is very defensive and his answer is too pat considering his status as the Iowa frontrunner. The CNN report is here, with video in case this one gets pulled: ” Ron Paul defensive over past newsletters .” And today’s Los Angeles Times made a serious effort to accept Paul’s explanation, saying that: Paul has disavowed the ranting of the newsletter published under his name (just as he did when the subject came up in 2008) and his spokesman says that Paul didn’t write it and “disagrees with it totally.” That’s comforting. Sort of. It helps distance Paul from these lunatic scribblings, but it fails to answer the question of why he allowed them to be published in the first place. He and his admirers complain bitterly when he’s ignored, then protest when he’s scrutinized. Paul should answer for these writings. That sounds reasonable. Suspect Burned 73-Year-Old Doris Gillespie Over Debt

On December 19, 2011, in Uncategorized, by DUFFYAPRIL35

This is literally grisly. At Los Angeles Times , ” New York man says he set woman on fire over debt “: NEW YORK — As Deloris Gillespie went up the elevator to her fifth-floor Brooklyn apartment, her killer was waiting. Surveillance video from inside the small elevator shows that he looked something like an exterminator, with a canister sprayer, white gloves and a dust mask perched atop his head like a pair of sunglasses. The sprayer was full of flammable liquid. When the elevator opened Saturday afternoon, the man sprayed the 73-year-old woman, who crouched to the floor to try to protect herself, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said. The attacker sprayed Gillespie in the face and continued to spray her “sort of methodically” over her head and parts of her body as her bags of groceries draped off her arms, Browne said. Then, Browne said, the attacker pulled out a barbecue-style lighter and ignited a rag in a bottle. He waited a few seconds, then backed out of the elevator and tossed in the flaming bottle. Also at London’s Daily Mail , ” Pictured: Woman, 73, who was doused in gasoline and burned to death in elevator ‘over handyman’s $2,000 debt’ .”

I predicted this the other day when I wrote : Newt will be hammered as the right’s public policy Ebenezer Scrooge who’s also an epic hypocrite adulterer with the moral backbone of a snail. And barely 24 hours later, here’s Charles Blow with an attack on Newt at the New York Times , ” Newt’s War on Poor Children “: Newt Gingrich has reached a new low, and that is hard for him to do. Nearly two weeks after claiming that child labor laws are “truly stupid” and implying that poor children should be put to work as janitors in their schools, he now claims that poor children don’t understand work unless they’re doing something illegal. On Thursday, at a campaign stop in Iowa, the former House speaker said, “Start with the following two facts: Really poor children in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works. So they literally have no habit of showing up on Monday. They have no habit of staying all day. They have no habit of ‘I do this and you give me cash’ unless it’s illegal.” (His second “fact” was that every first generational person he knew started work early.) This statement isn’t only cruel and, broadly speaking, incorrect, it’s mind-numbingly tone-deaf at a time when poverty is rising in this country. He comes across as a callous Dickensian character in his attitude toward America’s most vulnerable — our poor children. This is the kind of statement that shines light on the soul of a man and shows how dark it is. I’ve taken after Charles Blow before for his truly epic mendacity. But I had no idea I’d forecast this idiotic attack so accurately. Ebenzer Scrooge is, of course, the tight-fisted old meany in Charles Dickens’s 1843 novel, A Christmas Carol . Being Christmas season that’s the literary image that first came to me, but a variation of the Scrooge attack is inevitable if Newt manages to win the nomination. At that point I’ll of course be putting aside any differences I might have with Gingrich. Indeed, I’ll be bending over backwards for his victory over Barack Obama, who he has rightly hammered as ” Legitimately and Authentically a Saul Alinsky Radical .” Meanwhile, check out this penetrating essay at William Jacobson’s, ” Don’t play the “baggage” game .” And a key passage there: The purest of personally pure candidates will be faulted for being a religious nut and not hip enough to be president, someone from the white bread 1950s. Policies advocating personal responsibility and empowerment will be portrayed as cruel and favoring the rich. Advocacy of treating people according to the content of their characters rather than the colors of their skin will be protrayed as racially insensitive or racist. Exactly.

Manners Decline in the South

This is fascinating, despite the racial grievance undertones. At New York Times , ” A Last Bastion of Civility, the South, Sees Manners Decline .”

Manners Decline in the South

See LAT , ” Obama’s demographic support may not weather economy .” Actually, blacks are still enthusiastic about the president. See NYT , ” Black Voters’ Support for Obama Is Steady and Strong .” But check the graphic at LAT , ” Key States for Obama’s Reelection .” White voters in Florida, Ohio and Nevada will be especially crucial, and Latinos as well, who aren’t going to be as wedded to the Democrats as black voters. Colorado and New Mexico will be problematic as well, despite higher levels of college educated whites. Perhaps that’s why Obama continues to ramp up the class warfare rhetoric. Polls show a lot of sympathy with the occupy movement. No doubt the White House hopes the protesters don’t start turning on him, mentioning that he’s in the pocket of these same big banks and Wall Street brokerages. This is amazing, at WSJ , “Cain Vaults to Lead in Poll” (at Google ): CONCORD, N.H. — Former restaurant-industry executive Herman Cain has catapulted to the lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, as GOP voters grow disenchanted with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and remain wary of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds. Drawn by Mr. Cain’s blunt, folksy style in recent debates, 27% of Republican primary voters picked him as their first choice for the nomination, a jump of 22 percentage points from six weeks ago. Mr. Romney held firm in second place at 23%, his same share as in a Journal poll in late August, while Mr. Perry plummeted to 16%, from 38% in August. The poll of 1,000 adults, conducted from Oct. 6-10, comes as many Republican donors and officials have begun to rally around Mr. Romney as the party’s likely nominee, despite a continued lack of enthusiasm for him documented in the new poll. For Mr. Cain, the question is whether his newfound prominence, driven in part by his signature “9-9-9″ plan to overhaul the tax code, will be a lasting phenomenon in a campaign that has seen many others surge and then fade. Since the spring, conservatives have given short-lived bursts of support for a string of contenders, including Donald Trump, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Mr. Perry. “Will I be the flavor of the week?” Mr. Cain said Wednesday in New Hampshire, where reporters followed him as he addressed the state legislature. “Well, the answer is an emphatic, ‘No,’ because Häagen-Dazs black walnut tastes good all the time.” Mr. Cain in many ways isn’t operating a traditional campaign. He was on tour promoting his new book in recent weeks, and he will make stops between Memphis and Nashville on Friday and Saturday, though Tennessee is unlikely to factor in the Republican nomination. He doesn’t plan to return to Iowa, site of the first nominating contest, for weeks, his aides say. Also at Public Policy Polling, ” Cain leads nationally ” (via Memeorandum ). Cain discusses the Wall Street protests around 10 minutes at the video. See also The Other McCain, ” Pundette Likes Herman Cain .”

Negrophobia

On September 11, 2011, in Uncategorized, by JuanGetalty

I read but don’t normally blog William Jacobson’s Saturday Night Card Game. But last night’s was something else: ” Saturday Night Card Game (The “Negrophobia” card is played) .” The “Negrophobia” card is played at Balloon Juice, ” The Modern Negrophobists reaction to the President’s speech… ” It’s really disgusting, the cartoon and the ideas behind it in the contemporary context. But the commenters are running with it, for example : The modern negrophobist would demand the would be rescuer bring him a large rock so he could sink more quickly. That cartoon warms my heart. I especially like the way the artist depicted the bigot as some sort of weasel/human hybrid. I don’t even know what to say. These people are simply not my countrymen. The sentiment is analogous to the kind of anti-Semitism found in caricatured drawings of long-nosed money-grubbing Jews. In other words, it’s eliminationist. I haven’t finished listening to it, but Dennis Prager, in a clip at Blazing Cat Fur, indicates that progressive ideology is so removed from the basic values of this country as to be functionally anti-American. See: ” Dennis Prager’s Top 10 Ways Liberalism Makes America Worse .” Balloon Juice demonstrates the point 1000s of times over.
