A struggling soap-opera actor has reportedly taken his own life following regret after euthanizing his dog due to pressure from his Upper West Side condo management. The New York Post reports that friends of 47-year-old Nick Santino say that the actor wrote in his suicide note “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend.” “Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.” US Weekly reports that Santino had appeared on seven episodes of All My Children and six episodes of Guiding Light , and had been feeling “harassed” by his building management company, according to his neighbor Lia Pettigrew. US reports on the sad turn of events: “He was allegedly threatened with a $250 fine for having a barking dog, but according to neighbor Kevan Cleary, ‘the dog was not a barker, but somebody complained that the dog would bark.’ Santino phoned a former girlfriend at 2 a.m. Wednesday. Police found Santino’s body in his bedroom later that afternoon. The actor had overdosed on pills.” Rocco was Euthanized on Santino’s birthday. The Post reports that Santino was born in Brooklyn and raised in an orphanage and foster homes. The actor adopted Rocco from a shelter several years ago, and often mentioned his pet on Facebook, writing “I did not rescue Rocco, Rocco rescued me.” The Post reports that Rocco has been cremated, and friends said Santino’s remains will be too, and they will be reunited. NY Post : A member of the condo board that soap actor Nick Santino said pressured him to euthanize his pit bull — a “betrayal” that drove him to suicide — refused to accept any responsibility for the double tragedy yesterday. “I’m sorry the man is dead,” board member Marilyn Fireman barked to The Post, “But it has nothing to do with the pet policy.” “You just assumed that [his suicide] was a result of a board’s decision,” Fireman said, even though Santino routinely griped about the building’s anti-dog policies. Heartbroken relatives of the actor — who had stints on “All My Children” and “Guiding Light” — have retrieved the ashes of Rocco and plan to place them beside Santino’s body when he is laid to rest.

The commitment to the family has been a central focus of Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s campaign. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that the former Pennsylvania senator has put his campaign on hold Sunday in order to care for matters at home. POLITICO reports that Karen and Rick’s youngest daughter Isabella “Bella” Santorum has been admitted to a Philadelphia hospital, and all of the candidate’s Sunday morning campaign appearances have been canceled. “Rick and his wife Karen are admitting their daughter Bella to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia this evening. The campaign will cancel Rick’s upcoming Sunday morning Florida campaign schedule. However, Rick intends to return to Florida and resume the campaign schedule as soon as is possible,” Santorum communications director Hogan Gidley said in an email to POLITICO Saturday night. Bella was born in 2008 with Trisonomy-18, a serious chromosomal defect, and Santorum has discussed Bella’s health and condition on the campaign trail before. “I have a little girl who’s 3 1/2 years old,” he told Christian conservatives in Iowa before winning that lead-off contest. “I don’t know whether her life is going to be measured – it’s always been measured – in days and weeks. Yet here I am. … because I feel like I wouldn’t be a good dad if I wasn’t out here fighting for a country that would see the dignity in her and every other child.” The Associated Press notes that when voters ask Santorum about his daughter, he calls the decision to campaign “gut-retching” but says he goes forward for all special needs families. Santorum had been scheduled to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and attend church in Miami Sunday. Officials have not yet canceled Sunday’s afternoon events in Sarasota and Punta Gorda.

File this story under “world’s dumbest criminals.” This one’s a doozy. Three thieves broke into an Oregon man’s shed and stole tools, two safes with approximately 50 to 60 lbs. of silver and jewelry inside and a coin collection worth thousands of dollars. However, instead of cashing in on the full value of their ill-gotten goods, the thieves first headed over to the nearest Coinstar machine and tried to exchange the coins for cash. A Coinstar machine. Thousands of dollars worth of rare, valuable coins. No joke. Did they at least get a sizable payout? Nope: they got a whopping $450. Making matters worse, police say one of the thieves is the son of the man they robbed. “The crooks were idiots, just simply an idiot,” said Dan Johnson, Sr., the owner of the coins. Deputies said Dan Johnson, Jr., along with two other suspects, broke into the outbuildings on Christmas. Yes, Dan Johnson Jr. robbed his father on Christmas day, stole jewelry, silver and his coin collection and then tried to jam the coins into a Coinstar machine. See the FOX 12 Oregon update: “To not know the value of what they had taken, just to get pocket change for it. Makes me feel good he was a stupid person and didn’t realize what he had,” Johnson said. Yeah, he’s talking about his son. This guy. The Coinstar machine wouldn’t take some 500 silver quarters the burglars had stolen; they carted those off to the bank, KPTV reports. Luckily, Johnson has been able to recover portions of his collection. Once the theft was reported, the bank contacted Johnson and returned the coins. As for the ones they put in the machine, Johnson — with the help of some friends — has been able to recover portions of his collection by going through the coins deposited in the Coinstar receptacle. “It was an inheritance, which made it even worse because I lost an inheritance that was meant to go forward for my children and grandchildren,” he said. And it’s safe to say that Johnson is just a little peeved with his son (who’s still at large) and has no problem with the idea of Jr. being put behind bars. “I feel much better and I’m hoping that they’ll be off the street for a long time. I don’t want them to be around anybody else,” Johnson said. (h/t Newser )

It’s Rick Santorum’s turn to face the media’s attack gauntlet, and he’s certainly got a deep trove a material for his attackers. I defended Santorum on gay marriage earlier, but that story’s picking up steam as progressives never waste an opportunity to attack conservatives for alleged “bigotry”. See New York Times , ” Spotlight Shines on Santorum, Rough Edges and All .” Plus lots more at Memeorandum . And there’s even more progressive attacks on Rick Santorum’s alleged attacks on black welfare dependency, seen here at the MSNBC clip: All of that’s a given. More interesting from the GOP side is this report at Los Angeles Times , which shows Santorum clearly not an exemplary tea party-style candidate, ” Rick Santorum’s political evolution sparks scrutiny “:
