On MSNBC a moment ago, Harold Ford Jr. just asked, “Can Romney recover from his association with private equity?” The demonization of the free market is complete. This is, of course, in the context of a discussion of the Republican primary. Keep reading this post . . .

During the Q&A portion of a campaign stop by Ron Paul ‘s team in Iowa on Friday, a young boy who identified himself as having autism asked Paul how he would “protect” children with the disease. Naturally, Paul framed his answer in the context of civil liberty. “The most valuble resource for children, teenagers, college kids and adults is our liberties and that is the most important thing that we (the federal government) can do,” he said. It was a thoughtful and thorough answer, if predictable. Watch via the Washington Examiner .

Hermain Cain was kidding when he said as president he’d call for an electric fence along the Mexican border. But not really. Syke! Seriously, it was a joke. Not! From the Phoenix New Times : “Let me first say it was a joke, and some people don’t think that it was a good joke, and it’s probably not a joke that you’re supposed to make if you’re a presidential candidate,” [Cain said, speaking Monday at a meeting with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona]. “I apologize if it offended anyone. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa .” Only, it might not be a joke, he later said, before finally saying he just doesn’t want to offend anyone. “I don’t like to offend anyone…however, I don’t apologize for using a combination of a fence. And it might be electrified — I’m not walking away from that,” Cain backtracked. “I just don’t want to offend anybody. It was a joke to the extent in the context of the views of that speech, but in terms of what we need to do, I fully intend to do so because I’m more sensitive to our citizens being hurt.” Fake out! h/t “New York” magazine

Says Roger Clegg from the Center for Equal Opportunity, speaking yesterday at the University of Wisconsin. State Assemblyman Mark Pocan, a Democrat, attacked Clegg pretty agressively, according to Althouse : Whether the University complies with the standard laid down in the Supreme Court case law is, of course, crucial, but the state legislature has the power to impose a stricter standard on the University (if it thinks that’s a good idea). In addition, it’s possible that the CEO plans to use this case to get affirmative action back into the Supreme Court with the hope of changing the legal doctrine. RTWT for the context.

Responding to a question that Rush Limbaugh posed on his show yesterday—”What would Jesus take,” tax-wise?—Lawrence O’Donnell said that Jesus would take “everything.” O’Donnell said, “The New Testament does have an answer to Rush’s question, ‘What would Jesus take?’ and it’s not one Rush is going to like.” “The answer is everything,” O’Donnell said. Speaking about tax brackets, he went on, “not 35 percent, not 39.6 percent. One hundred percent.” Referring— out of context —to a passage in the New Testament, O’Donnell continued, “It seems very clear that Jesus would be cool with a 39.6 tax bracket for those making over $250,000.” Hat-tip  Newbusters , which has more that you should check out on the context of O’Donnell’s remarks, and on the particular passage that O’Donnell quotes. Reuters – U.S. President Barack Obama will discuss Pakistan in the context of regional security and counterterrorism in his speech to the Indian parliament on Monday, a senior administration official said on Sunday.

Is he wrong ? Woodward’s book portrays Obama and the White House as barraged by warnings about the threat of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil and confronted with the difficulty in preventing them. During an interview with Woodward in July, the president said, “We can absorb a terrorist attack. We’ll do everything we can to prevent it, but even a 9/11, even the biggest attack ever . . . we absorbed it and we are stronger.” Conservatives who demand context for every Christine O’Donnell gaffequote are outraged!!!!1! , even though you just saw all the context provided for Obama’s statement. Then again, is the context likely to provide what conservatives want to hear: a strong declaration that, while we can rise above any terrorist attack, it’s unacceptable and we would retaliate with overwhelming force? Doubtful. I grade my reaction as “ready to be outraged” — but not quite there until I hear the context. Your mileage may vary and probably does. P.S. If you are interested in the administration’s anonymous and self-serving spin on what the context allegedly was, it is set forth here .

Imam Rauf at Council on Foreign Relations

On September 14, 2010, in Uncategorized, by If Bush Did It

Richard Haass , President of Council on Foreign Relations, asks Imam Rauf , “why don’t you undo” the damage you’ve done with your plans to build the victory mosque? Watch the Imam evade and prevaricate. He doesn’t even entertain the notion of relocating the mosque, and thus shows once more that he has no interest in bridge-building. It’s all a scam in the name of jihad (full video at the link ): O’Reilly picks it up from there: Also, great discussion from this morning’s Fox & Friends: More at NYT ( FWIW ), ” ‘Everything Is on the Table,’ Imam Says of Plans .” Turns out the Imam has conceded the possibility of a move, but of course this is in the context of once again attacking critics of the mosque as “radicals.” Also at New York Post , ” Ground Zero mosque imam ‘saddened to the core’ .”
