Mitt Romney is under fire for an ad he released in New Hampshire after it became known that the spot contained an out of context quote by President Obama. The media didn’t hesitate to pounce on the error and of course liberal stalwart and former MSNBC employee Cenk Uygur was quick to note the contextual discrepancy. On the November 23 rd 2011 of The Young Turks, Uygur expressed his outrage: The main lie in the ad when they quoted Obama saying, “If we keep talking about the economy we’re going to lose.” Now, you want to know what the reality is? That was Obama in 2008 quoting a John McCain advisor. The early part of that sentence which they cut out of the video was, “a John McCain advisor says if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose. So you could not quote him more out of context. That is an absolute lie Obama did not say that about his own campaign…it’s the exact opposite of what the reality is. And Uygur was right. The line was taken completely out of context and should never have made it to air. Uygur’s outrage is rather disingenuous, however, when you consider one of his previous experiences with context in political campaign ads. If we think back on the most egregious cases of “out of context” quoting in recent history, Former Florida Congressman Alan Grayson’s ‘Taliban Dan’ ad from 2010. If you’ll remember, this is the ad in which Grayson quoted opponent Daniel Webster at a church function saying, “Wives submit yourself to your husband” and “she should submit to me, that’s in the bible”. The full context of the quotes , however, clearly show’s that Webster was specifically saying NOT to quote those passages in the bible. At the time, Grayson took a considerable amount of flak for the ad except for one person who had nothing but praise, Cenk Uygur. Take a look at this clip of Uygur calling Grayson’s ad a “show of strength” on September 27th of 2010: Looks like Cenk was for full context before he was against it. On a side note, congratulations to Current TV on it’s acquisition of Cenk . Considering his consistency issues, I’m sure that’s going to work out as well as his tenure at MSNBC. Update 11:08am: Lee Doren points out to me that Cenk later pulled a  mea culpa on his praise of the Grayson ad saying that Grayson was right on the substance of Dan Webster’s positions but that he was ”Breitbarting it” with the editing. Credit where it’s due.

A Mostly Delightful, But Sometimes Very Weird Night

On November 3, 2010, in Uncategorized, by If Bush Did It

I've been talking and Tweeting much of the night, as by the time I am ready to post, the information feels out of date. There are a lot of scoreboards out there, but a couple of quick thoughts . . . It's the biggest Republican gain in two generations — and yet, because of a few key races, it feels a little disappointing. Wins to savor tonight: Marco Rubio in Florida, Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania, Bobby Schilling in Illinois. Nikki Haley in South Carolina. Daniel Webster's defeat of the Devil in Florida's 8th District. Susana Martinez's big win in New Mexico. Allen West. Chip Cravaack beating James Oberstar in Minnesota. Mick Mulvaney beating John Spratt in South Carolina. The big comeback in New York State's House races. Right now, GOP gains are at 57 seats in the House, 6 seats in the Senate. Renee Ellmers finished narrowly ahead of Bob Etheridge in NC-2. Oddly, the other endangered Democrats hung on! I suspect a major question in the coming days will be understanding why Republicans did phenomenally well in House races, pretty darn well in gubernatorial races (still waiting on a few), and a little disappointing in Senate races (losing NV, WV, CT, DE, CA, and perhaps WA and CO). One theory will be that the Democrats successfully personalized these races. Or perhaps it will be a question of candidate quality. I ended up loving the tenaciousness of Linda McMahon's campaign, but her WWE past was less than ideal for a run against a state attorney general. Sharron Angle's flaws? We can discuss them more later, but we all know they're there. Ditto Christine O'Donnell. Dan Maes. Carl Paladino. A lot of key races ended up with candidates who were . . .

Gibson Suddenly Leads in NY-20 By the Mad Max

In New York's 20th Congressional District, Siena finds a huge late surge for one of the candidates we've urged you to help : Entering the final week of the campaign, Republican Chris Gibson has reversed an early campaign deficit and turned it into a 51-42 percent lead over Democratic Representative Scott Murphy, who is seeking his first re-election, according to a Siena (College) Research Institute poll of likely voters released today. Gibson has become much more known to voters over the last six weeks, with a positive three-to-two favorability rating. Murphy remains known to more voters, however, they are evenly divided between those who view him favorably and those who view him unfavorably. “Chris Gibson has completely erased a 17-point deficit and now takes a strong nine-point lead into the final week of the campaign against incumbent Scott Murphy,” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg. “Republican voters have come home to Gibson. He had led by only 27 points and now leads by nearly 60 points among Republicans. He has also won over independents, who had previously sided with Murphy by a nearly two-to-one margin, and now give Gibson a seven-point lead. In other House polls today, Kristi Noem is up by 2 in South Dakota, Daniel Webster is up by 7 over Alan Grayson in Florida, Andy Vidak is up 10 on Jim Costa in California, and Republican Raul Labrador is within 3 of incumbent Democrat Walt Minnick in a heavily-Republican district in Idaho. You know what this means, right? It means Jay Cost is being bombarded with gamma rays. JAY COST ANGRY! JAY COST SMASH! Jim Geraghty

Ba-boom! Summarizing the big poll dump the NRCC just provided the Washington Post: FL-8: Daniel Webster (R) 46, Alan Grayson* (D) 30 PA 3: Mike Kelly (R) 56, Kathy Dahlkemper* (D) 39 OH-15: Steve Stivers (R) 51, Mary Jo Kilroy* (D) 39 WA-3: Jaime Herrera (R) 51, Denny Heck (D) 38 NY-20: Chris Gibson (R) 48, Scott Murphy* (D) 45 MA-10: Jeff Perry (R) 44, Bill Keating (D) 42 IL-17: Bobby Schilling (R) 44, Phil Hare* (D) 41 PA-10: Tom Marino (R) 44, Chris Carney* (D) 37 VA-9: Morgan Griffith (R) 44, Rick Boucher* (D) 44 OR-5: Scott Bruun (R) 44, Kurt Schrader (D) 42 OH-6: Bill Johnson (R) 40, Charlie Wilson* (D) 40 (* = denotes incumbent) All of these results sound pretty plausible, but if you want to take some salt with an NRCC-commissioned poll, that's fine. I would note that any Democratic incumbent who's polling in the high 30s or low 40s in a cycle like this is probably doomed or close to doomed. Jim Geraghty

Alan Grayson Gets the Alan Grayson Treatment

FAIL: Grayson falls 7 points behind

On September 30, 2010, in Uncategorized, by

After Congressman Alan Grayson’s dirtbaggery was put on display for America to see, the money has flowed to his opponent and now Grayson finds himself in a hole. A Sunshine State News Poll has him down 7 points to Daniel Webster, but his problems don’t stop there. It seems the more people see of Grayson, the more they don’t like him. the numbers look even worse for Grayson as 51 percent of respondents said they had an unfavorable view of the Orlando-area congressman. “Grayson has real problems here,” said Jim Lee, president of Voter Survey Service, which conducted the poll for Sunshine State News. “He’s even more unpopular than the president, which is not surprising given how controversial he has been with his rhetoric, overall style and TV ads.” It’s gonna be a sweet November… h/t Hotair

FAIL: Grayson falls 7 points behind

**Written by Doug Powers The hopefully future ex-Florida Representative and inspiration for the invention of the straight-jacket is down by seven points in Florida: In one of the most closely watched U.S. House races in the nation, Republican Daniel Webster now holds a 7-point lead over Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson in Central Florida’s 8th Congressional District, according to a new Sunshine State News Poll. Webster, a former state senator, leads the freshman congressman 43-36 in the survey of 559 likely voters conducted Sept. 25-27. TEA (“Taxed Enough Already”) Party candidate Peg Dunmire drew 6 percent and NPA hopeful George Metcalfe garnered 3 percent, while 9 percent remained undecided (2 percent cited “other” and 1 percent refused to state). Digging deeper, the numbers look even worse for Grayson as 51 percent of respondents said they had an unfavorable view of the Orlando-area congressman. Time to make more of those lying, disgraceful context-edited ads ! Saying the “Taliban Dan” ad was a “new low” as applied to Alan Grayson is a redundancy of the highest order. There’s still over a month until the election, so there’s plenty more “low” to go. Here’s the reason for Grayson’s desperation to paint Daniel Webster as the second coming of Ike Turner meets Archie Bunker: Female voters are anything but ambivalent about Grayson — “They really loathe him,” Lee reported. With Grayson’s 33/53 favorable/unfavorable rating among women, Webster’s lead among females is much stronger (45/33 over Grayson) compared to a statistical tie (41/40 Webster) among males. Epic backfire . (h/t Brian Faughnan ) **Written by Doug Powers Twitter @ThePowersThatBe

No Wonder Alan Grayson’s Getting Even Nuttier Than Usual

Big news in this morning's Jolt: His Name Is Grayson, But His Soul Is Dark There are times when covering politics is pretty depressing. You watch candidates you admire stumble and fall, you watch the empty-headed and hard-hearted thrive. Sometimes the voters have great instincts and recoil from the soullessly ambitious and power-hungry; sometimes you watch them elect anybody with the right partisan affiliation. And then, sometimes you watch thousands upon thousands of them vote for Alvin Greene because they like the musician Al Green. Let’s hope that Alan Grayson is a one-termer, and that the people of the greater Orlando area look upon his 2008 election as a one-time snafu; perhaps they were in a Democratic mood and they just didn’t take a good look at the guy. Let’s hope, because he’s been bringing the Daily Kos-style of snarling obnoxiousness and sneering insults to Congress from day one, and it’s hard to see how any of us are better off for this, other than Alan Grayson. Then you have moments like this morning, suggesting that the political world isn’t immune to karma : In one of the most closely watched U.S. House races in the nation, Republican Daniel Webster now holds a 7-point lead over Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson in Central Florida's 8th Congressional District, according to a new Sunshine State News Poll. Webster, a former state senator, leads the freshman congressman 43-36 in the survey of 559 likely voters conducted Sept. 25-27. Cue Coldplay’s “Vida La Vida.” Politico declares his latest ad has “backfired,” which is nice to hear: “Rep. Alan Grayson's attempt to equate his Republican challenger with the Taliban is having a big impact — just not the one Grayson may have hoped,” they write, noting that the Orlando Sentinel
