**Written by Doug Powers This week DHS Director Janet Napolitano visited Indianapolis to secure the perimeter of Lucas Oil Stadium. Even the food vendors, now referred to in DHS circles as the elite “Meal Team Six,” have been trained to assist in the counterterrorism effort : Despite acknowledging there are “no credible or specific threats” to the safety of the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis on Sunday, the TSA is training thousands of fast food sellers and other vendors to spot terrorists under the “First Observer” program. “TSA said over 8,000 stadium vendors, parking lot attendants, shuttle bus drivers, and other transportation professionals received the agency’s First Observer training for detecting and assessing indicators and planning tactics of potential terrorist activities,” reports Government Security News. At last year’s Super Bowl they tried having local restaurant maître d’s ask patrons waiting to be seated, “terrorist or non-terrorist?” Unfortunately, nobody fell for it. If “First Observer” turns out to be a success, the Joe Biden can koozie vendors at Bank of America Stadium working the final day of the DNC Convention will be similarly trained. So if you’re at the Super Bowl, make sure to let J-Nap know if you spot anything out-of-the-ordinary. **Written by Doug Powers Twitter @ThePowersThatBe

A flack for Media Matters for America, the Soros-backed one-trick GOP-bashing pony, sent an e-mail peddling the group’s latest anti-Keystone XL “study” to the Senate Democrats’ communications director at the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Mary Kerr. For some reason, Senate Republican EPW communications director Matt Dempsey with GOP Sen. James Inhofe’s office also ended up cc’ed on the e-mail. Ooops. Their mistake is our gained insight (or rather, confirmation of what we already assumed). Read on: From: Emilee Pierce [mailto:epierce@mediamatters.org] Sent: Wednesday, January 25, 2012 09:11 PM To: Kerr, Mary (EPW); Dempsey, Matt (EPW) Subject: Heads up – MMFA study on media coverage of KXL out tomorrow Mary and Matt, I wanted to flag that MMFA will be putting out a major, quantitative report on media coverage of KXL tomorrow morning. The study will be similar to our EPA counting study (http://mediamatters.org/research/201106070010) — and will drill home the point the media bought right into Big Oil’s desired frame on KXL, focusing largely on the (inflated) number of jobs that could be created, without paying due attention to the many other important issues at stake. (Ranchers’ land, spills, climate change, etc.) We are hoping for a big media splash, but – more importantly – we’re hoping that allies will be able to leverage it to gain favorable coverage. I’ve pasted a very brief summary below – and will be sure to send along the final study as soon as it’s up. If you have any questions, please let me know. All the best, Emilee STUDY: The Press And The Pipeline A Media Matters analysis shows that as a whole, news coverage of the Keystone XL pipeline between August 1 and December 31 favored pipeline proponents. Although the project would create few long-term employment opportunities, the pipeline was primarily portrayed as a jobs issue. Pro-pipeline voices were quoted more frequently than those opposed, and dubious industry estimates of job creation were uncritically repeated 5 times more often than they were questioned. Meanwhile, concerns about the State Department’s review process and potential environmental consequences were often overlooked, particularly by television outlets. – ————————————– Emilee Pierce External Affairs Director for Climate and Environment Media Matters for America Matt Dempsey e-mails: “It’s not often that Senator Inhofe’s office receives emails of a heads up to promote the Media Matters agenda! So I will do my part and share with you tonight to help them get the ‘favorable coverage’ they want from their ‘allies’ on Capitol Hill.” We know at least one Democrat recycling the Media Matters talking points: Chicago Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky (Ill.), who tried arguing today that 20,000 jobs “is not that many.” Chicago Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky (Ill.) drew fire from Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) on Wednesday when she dismissed the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, suggesting the 20,000 jobs it could create were relatively insignificant in the scheme of the greater economy. “Twenty thousand jobs is really not that many jobs, and investing in green technologies will produce that and more,” she said on Chicago’s WLS Radio Don Wade and Roma Show on Wednesday morning. “But I’ll tell you what, you know it seems to me that the Republicans would rather have an issue than a pipeline.” Coats, a vocal proponent of the project, which would transport oil from Alberta, Canada, to America’s Gulf Coast, swiftly responded in a separate interview on the same show later on Wednesday morning, suggesting Schakowsky has spoken insensitively. “Tell that to the 20,000 people that woke up this morning and didn’t have a job to go to,” said Coats. “ ‘Well, these don’t really matter’ — I mean, this not only is jobs, this is less dependence on Middle East oil.” “And here we have, you know, the president talking about becoming energy independent, but he turns down the easiest way to do that,” the freshman senator continued.

Well, I’ve just finished scouring the White House visitor logs. Regular readers know I seem to be one of the few in the media who actually does such a thing. Regular readers also know that I’ve pointed out time and again that the logs are incomplete, misleading, obtuse, and designed to make it as difficult as possible to figure out who has visited and when. So, it is no surprise that neither director Tim Burton nor actor Johnny Depp — hosts of the big 2009 Hollywood Halloween bash at the White House — show up in the visitor logs. At least as far as I can tell. Use the search function and look for yourselves. White House Visitor Records Requests Powered by Socrata This is a screen cap of the 10/31/09 list where Burton’s name should be (click for full size ): And this is a screen cap of the 10/31/09 list where Depp’s name should be (click for full size ): Actress Mia Wasikowska, who played Alice, was also at the White House for picture-taking, along with several other cast members. Her name is also missing from the logs. On FanPop via Verum Serum , several photos show the celebs posing inside the White House: The party held in the State Dining Room and East Room benefited military families — always a good thing. That’s besides the point. The Tinseltown cover-up , hushed to avert bad press when the economy was stuck in a recession and the Tea Party was on the rise, simply underscores the cloud-based transparency that has marked this administration from day one. It is laughable that the White House reaction is to call the story “ old news ” — when the White House visitor log keepers apparently have yet to be told of the visits. Looks like disclosure-subverting business as usual. *** Flashback: Obama’s Coffee House Loophole Archive of previous Obama transparency posts here .

And also, Director Blue, ” Nice: Occupy Movement Crashes Rose Parade with 70-Foot Octopus “Float” That Pins Economic Woes On… Well, You Know “: This is the modern Left in action. It tries to divide Americans against one another: rich vs. poor, black vs. white, union vs. non-union, urban vs. rural, you name it. This kind of rhetoric defies American tradition and, furthermore, it’s downright dangerous. Nothing good can come from demonizing arbitrary groups of Americans. Well, you don’t say. General Electric has agreed to pay $70.4 million to settle a criminal probe and civil claims brought against the corporation for having allegedly conspired to rig bids on U.S. municipal bond deals, overcharging state and local governments on their investments. GE’s settlement stems from an investigation into the conduct of three now-former GE employees between 1999 and 2004 at a unit of the finance division that was discontinued in April 2010, GE said in a statement today. “Our in-depth investigations have uncovered pervasive corrupt practices in the municipal securities reinvestment market, and we are requiring financial firms one by one to step up and pay the price for their misconduct,” said Robert Khuzami, the director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement. The deal GE struck will resolve investigations by the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Internal Revenue Service, as well as the attorneys general of 25 states. GE Funding Capital Markets Services, a former unit, is the fifth company to enter into a settlement as part of a more than five-year federal investigation. “GE Funding’s former traders entered into illegal agreements to manipulate the bidding process on municipal investment contracts,” said Sharis A. Pozen, acting assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department’s antitrust division. “This anticompetitive conduct harmed municipalities as well as taxpayers.” GE, the largest U.S. conglomerate, said on Friday that it “exited the business in question in April 2010” and that the three employees who were involved in the scandal are no longer working for it. The settlement brings the total amount so far paid by companies to end the case to $743 million. Bank of America, JPMorgan, UBS , and Wells Fargo previously settled similar cases. (Related: Netflix Faces Barriers to European Expansion) GE said it was “pleased” to have resolved the matter and that it had already accounted for the settlement costs in prior quarters. Currently, there is no word as to whether the eighteen people who have been charged–and the 9 who have pleaded guilty–are “pleased.” (h/t Huffington Post ) [ Editor's note: portions of the above originally appeared on Wall St. Cheat Sheet . ]

A new ad from UNICEF Sweden is meant to encourage viewers to give gifts of charity during the Holiday Season, but has the punchline and vibe of an Occupy Wall Street propaganda linking Santa Claus to the 1 percent. Could the United Nations Children’s Fund be the latest participant in the War on Christmas? While giving charitable donations in others names as gifts may be a noble gesture, the brash and cold Saint Nick presented in the commercial seems like an odd way to entice viewers to purchase UNICEF stocking suffers such as malaria tablets, rehydration bags and polio vaccines. “I don’t do poor countries,” says Santa in a malevolent tone closing the commercial. He is followed by the UNICEF message “We go where Santa doesn’t — Buy your Christmas gifts at unicef.se.” What Christmas movies do you think this director grew up watching?
