At New York Times , ” Romney Unleashes Attack With Gingrich Sole Target “: TAMPA, Fla. — Mitt Romney leveled a searing attack against Newt Gingrich’s character and raised pointed questions about his ability to lead during a debate here Monday evening, taking urgent steps to slow Mr. Gingrich’s rising momentum in the fight for the Republican presidential nomination. For the first time, Mr. Gingrich strode onto the stage as an indisputable equal to Mr. Romney after dislodging him from his confident perch as the front-runner in the race with his commanding victory on Saturday in South Carolina. Mr. Romney dug into his rival’s tenure as House speaker and the ensuing years, when he advised companies like the mortgage giant Freddie Mac, a period for which Mr. Romney branded him as “an influence peddler in Washington.” “You are looking for a person who can lead this country at a very critical time,” Mr. Romney said. “The speaker was given the opportunity to be the leader of our party in 1994, and after four years he resigned in disgrace.” Mr. Gingrich painted Mr. Romney’s attacks as desperate and riddled with inaccuracies. He embraced his confrontational style and defended himself forcefully, but his responses came without the bombast that has delighted crowds throughout the race. “They’re not sending somebody to Washington to manage the decay,” Mr. Gingrich said. “They’re sending somebody to Washington to change it, and that requires somebody who’s prepared to be controversial when necessary.” The new landscape of the Republican campaign came into sharp view, with Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich often seeming as though they had traded personalities for the evening. It was clear from the outset that the tables had turned, as Mr. Romney repeatedly tried to provoke Mr. Gingrich, who has built up a reputation as a formidable debater. “I’m not going to spend the evening trying to chase Governor Romney’s misinformation,” Mr. Gingrich said, telegraphing his plan to try to take the high road. “I think the American public deserves a discussion about how to beat Barack Obama.” Yet on the eve of President Obama’s State of the Union address, the debate was notable for the lack of time devoted to Mr. Obama. It was the first sign of the consequences of a drawn-out Republican nominating contest, with Mr. Obama taking a back seat to terse re-examinations of the candidates’ records. Continue reading . At Los Angeles Times , ” Police brace for more L.A. arson fires on New Year’s Eve ,” and ” L.A. Fire Department asks public’s help to crack arson rampage .” And CNN has a report: ” 35 Southern California fires rock cities .” These are really horrendous, vicious attacks. The arsonists are torching cars as the “matchsticks” to set buildings ablaze. I’ll be watching this story into the evening. UPDATE : This could be the beginning of a new rash of arsons, ” Firefighters respond to carport fire in Hollywood .” And there’s a report at the New York Times , ” For Second Night, Vehicles Are Set Ablaze in Los Angeles Area .” 10:35pm : At LAT , ” Hundreds of police, firefighters battle renewed L.A. arson .”

Cain: ‘I am not deterred’

On December 1, 2011, in Uncategorized, by

Herman Cain is sending mixed signals. Despite reports Tuesday that Cain told senior staff of his campaign that he was “reassessing” whether to stay in the presidential race, he sent an email to supporters that seemed to say otherwise. In the email sent Tuesday, he addressed the claim by Georgia woman Ginger White who says she had a 13-year extramarital affair with Cain. He called the allegations “fabricated.” He also said, “Let me assure you, I am not deterred. America’s future is too important. We will continue on this journey to make America great once again.” Here’s the full email via Time magazine: Dear Patriots and Supporters, As you probably heard yesterday, a troubled Atlanta business woman used national media outlets to promulgate a fabricated, unsubstantiated story about a 13 year affair with me. I am writing you today to assure you that this woman’s story is completely false. I do know Ms. White. I have helped her financially at times over the past few years, just as I have helped many friends and acquaintances throughout the years. I thought Ms. White was a friend in need of a supportive hand to better her life. Ms. White has made it apparent that she was abusing the friendship. But now I am asking for your friendship. I am also asking for your prayers and support. This is a trying time for my family, my campaign, and for me. It is also a trying time for our country as we are all distracted from the truly important issues facing our nation. This evening I have an important speaking engagement at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan, where I will be outlining my foreign policy and national security plan. While recent events have taken a toll on me, the people in the audience this evening will not know it. I will deliver my message with vigor and enthusiasm. Let me assure you, I am not deterred. America’s future is too important. We will continue on this journey to make America great once again. Thank you and God bless. Sincerely, Herman Cain

Spicoli’s Political Rantings

On October 16, 2011, in barack obama, Uncategorized, by old dog

Sean Penn, the wildly liberal actor whose best work (perhaps due to its heartfelt authenticity with Penn) was probably playing Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (though I thought he also gave a seminal performance in Team America: World Police ) is now spouting off about the Republican Party’s racist motives. On CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight (and is life not stranger than fiction that this show exists?), Penn explained why Republicans and specifically Tea Party activists dislike Barack Obama . Hint: It’s not because of 9.1 percent unemployment or apologizing around the world for our nation. Quoth Penn: “You have what I call the Get The ‘N-word’ Out of the White House Party.” If that weren’t enough, he suggested that Tea Party members, when they think of Barack Obama, wonder “Can we just lynch him?” To Mr. Penn, if I may offer you some reference material which is so recent that even you should still remember it, munchies and all: Herman Cain is (at least for now) leading the Republican field in at least two national polls ( WSJ/NBC and PPP ). In case you hadn’t noticed, Herman Cain is black. Really black. Not just Obama-black. He “was po ‘ before [he] was poor.” For those who question aloud whether any particular candidate is “black enough” for their taste, Herman Cain is the real deal, unlike our current president who is black when it helps him campaign in Chicago and “post-partisan” when it helps him campaign in Des Moines. Not that I care about any of that. It’s worth repeating (and repeating again) that the only party that focuses on a candidate’s skin color is the Democrats. So, we’ve established that a black man is leading Republican polls. Now, Jeff/Sean, here’s the other piece of the puzzle: Quoting from an NBC News analysis of the WSJ/NBC poll: “Fueled by Tea Party supporters, conservatives and high-interest GOP primary voters, former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain now leads the race for the Republican presidential nomination…” Quoting from PPP’s analysis of their own poll: “Strong Tea Party support has Cain in the driver’s seat nationally, just as he has been on our last four individual state polls. With non-Tea Party Republicans Romney actually leads Cain 29-27. But with the Tea Party crowd Cain is getting 39% with Gingrich at 16%, Perry at 14%, and Romney in 4th place at 13%.” So, Jeff/Sean, not only is a black man leading the Republican polling (occasional skepticism of his staying power notwithstanding), he’s leading on the strength of Tea Party support. It’s primarily the moderate-to-liberal, “non-Tea Party” wing of the Republican Party that is supporting the white guy. Sean “Spicoli” Penn lives in his own little leftist bubble. Perhaps it’s his home, perhaps it’s Hollywood more generally, but if there were ever a time when the evidence right in front of us disproves the idea that the Tea Party’s animus toward Barack Obama is based on the president’s skin color, it’s now. Penn must sincerely wish that Republicans were evil racists, but it just ain’t so. Though Penn’s appeal to racism was his most controversial statement of the evening, the rest of his commentary suggested no further evidence of a functioning cerebrum. While Penn offered , with no substantiation at all, that “capitalism’s now working,” he was honest enough to add that “socialism certainly doesn’t work.” If only he’d stopped there, he might have seemed less Spicoli-like than he continues to. Instead he added, “At least the socialists say this is the socialist experiment.” The patient died, but the doctor’s snake-oil treatment was an experiment. How’s that malpractice suit going to work out? Probably no better than the economy is. (FDR’s economic experimentation, flowing as it was from a man as economically ignorant — but as undeterred by his ignorance — as our current president, was equally disastrous.) His most truthful statement of the evening, by far, was when he admitted “I don’t claim a great understanding of the levels of economics.” I’m not even sure he has much of an understanding of what he understands. Jeff Spicoli lives, and you can hear his political views on CNN.

When residents gather in Mount Airy, North Carolina this evening, there will be a banner hanging on a tractor trailer at the back of the stage. This is the banner: The rally this evening has been months in the making. Shortly after Glenn Beck began talking about his plans for a new ’1791′ clothing line that will benefit his new Mercury One charity effort, folks in town know as the model for “Mayberry” began lobbying to bring the manufacturing jobs to Mount Airy.  Beck has been clear that the ’1791′ project may not involve many jobs in initial stages…so it may not be a manufacturing windfall.  But he has been looking for and celebrating vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in towns across the country. The mayor and others emailed Beck, making their pitch for Mount Airy.

But there was some discord.  The board of commissioners seemed hesitant to back the job recruitment effort citing Beck’s ideological leanings. This perturbed Beck who said on the radio:  “I won’t do anything in a city where you are going to make everything about politics. Forget it. I’m really not interested in working around a bunch of people who might consider job creation a partisan event.” The Mount Airy mayor, Deborah Cochran, called Beck’s radio show a few minutes later to state her case: And eventually the Surry County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to send a letter to Beck encouraging the project. A local resident, Melissa Hiatt, decided to create a new t-shirt: This is from our report at the time: Melissa Hiatt told the Mount Airy News she created the shirt — which has the words “Bring it Beck!“ over an image of the American flag and a ”Made in the U.S.A.” stamp — to support Mayor Deborah Cochran’s efforts, and because the board of commissioners reportedly declined to support the project due to Beck’s politics. “I’m very proud of her for being persistent and for going after such a thing,” Hiatt said. She said there needed to be something to show the community‘s support for the mayor and Beck’s project. “We want jobs and we should leave politics out of it.” Then a few weeks ago plans came together for a rally to be held on Labor Day.   WGHP-TV covered the story: There is now, of course, a Facebook page backing the effort and tonight rally.  Here is the flyer they have been distributing: The Mount Airy News has this preview: Today, a “Bring It Beck” jobs rally is being held in honor of Labor Day and in an effort to encourage television and radio host Glenn Beck to locate a manufacturing operation in Mount Airy. The jobs rally is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., featuring speakers, special music and other attractions. It will be held at the corner of Independence Boulevard and Willow Street. The day’s events, which will last about two hours, include local elected government officials as well as businesspeople speaking, special music by Rachel Johnson and food sales. Organizers say there will be a video documentary produced about the event that will be sent to Beck. Note:  The Blaze will be monitoring local media coverage of the event tonight — but feel free to send any initial pictures and video of the event directly to me so that we can provide quick coverage this evening! So while the manufacturing plans for the ’1791′ project are not fully clear, and may not be the economic answer for any particular town, it’s clear that the drive and determination evident in Mount Airy is a sign that the spirit of American enterprise is very much alive.
