Roundup on Newt Gingrich and the ‘Palestinians’

On December 13, 2011, in Uncategorized, by alexasami1a1

In the odd case that you missed it, the video’s here: ” Newt Gingrich on Palestinians at GOP Debate in Iowa: ‘These People Are Terrorists’ .” Now, see Caroline Glick, ” Gingrich’s Fresh Hope .” It’s a long post, but interestingly the biggest challenge to Gingrich is not the Arab liars backing the Hamas-dominated Palestinians, but the U.S. conservatives attacking Newt for “turning his back on a 30- year bipartisan consensus” on the (failed) two-state solution for Middle East peace. And check Daniel Greenfield, ” A Badly Invented People .” This is excellent: Palestinian identity is just so much gibberish. The official definition of that identity encompasses only those parts of the Palestine Mandate which Israel holds today. The people who live on the parts of the Palestine Mandate that were turned into the Kingdom of Jordan in 1921 are not Palestinians. There is no call to incorporate them into a Palestinian state. The people who lived in the parts of Israel that were captured by Jordan and Egypt in 1948 weren’t Palestinians, and there was no call to turn the land that today comprises the so-called “Occupied Territories” into a state. But in 1967 when Israel liberated those areas– only then did they magically turn into Palestinians. How is anyone supposed to take this nonsense seriously? But RTWT. And from Melanie Phillips, ” Hey, stop this dangerous candidate! He’s told the truth! “: US presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich … has recently demonstrated yet again Melanie’s First Rule of Modern Political Discourse – the more obvious the truth that you utter, the more explosive and abusive the reaction. For Gingrich said the Palestinian Arabs were ‘an invented people’ – and the world promptly started hurling execrations at him, as if such a statement proved beyond doubt that Gingrich was indeed a dangerously extreme individual who, when it came to political positioning, was just off the graph altogether. More at the link (with additional sources at the discussion). And there’s lots of stuff at FrontPage Magazine , for example, from David Horowitz, ” Gingrich Gets It Right “: In an interview on Saturday, Newt Gingrich put some reality into the surreal discussion of the Middle East conflict and (as he put it) the delusional nature of the current “peace process.” The Palestinians are indeed an “invented people” — invented by the Nasser dictatorship and KGB by the way — and the Hitlerian lie that Israel occupies one square inch of “Arab” let alone “Palestinian” land needs to be buried for any clarity on what the conflict is about, let alone progress towards peace. Of course there is no peace in the Middle East and there can be no peace so long as the Muslim Arabs want to kill the Jews and destroy the Jewish state. That is the explicit goal of the enemies of Israel in the terrorist entities of Gaza and the West Bank, and also of Israel’s principal enemy the Islamic Republic of Iran. And another essay from Horowitz, ” An Invented People Despite Some Doubters “: Some conservatives, most notably Elliot Abrams, have criticized Newt Gingrich’s observation that the Palestinians are an invented people by saying that even if they are — (and there is no real question but that they are) — they’ve been around long enough (50 years, or since the creation of the PLO in 1964) so that we need to deal with that fact — not. What makes anyone think this is a people even today? Last spring I spoke at Brooklyn College. My speech was attended and then obstructed by a sizeable contingent from the Brooklyn College “Palestinian Club” — at least fifty people, all ethnic Arabs claiming to be Palestinians. During my talk I referred to the Palestinian death cult, its admiration for Hitler, its determination to wipe the Jewish state from the face of the earth, its eagerness to kill any Jew and to blow up its own children in the process. I said it was a “sick, sick culture.” But when the members of the so-called Palestinian Club erupted at me, what they said was “Why do you want to lynch all Muslims?” (This is on video available on YouTube or on our site — under “Videos” — for anyone who wants to check. It comes in the Q&A period.) This does not sound like a nationalist movement. But the evidence is that Palestinians are a political fiction for a movement whose organizing desire is the destruction of the Jewish state and expulsion of the Jews is far stronger than this small incident. In 1948, 80% of the so-called “Palestine Mandate” had been given to the Hashemite minority in control of Jordan. The Jews were given half of the remaining 20% and the Arabs the other half. A nationalist movement would surely have accepted the partition and then laid claim to the 80% controlled by the Hashemites in Jordan. No such thing happened. Instead the Arab states including Jordan attacked the Jewish state with the intention of destroying it. The upshot of that war was a Jewish victory in 1949. Whereupon Egypt annexed Gaza and Jordan annexed the West Bank — all the territory that had been offered to the so-called Palestinians and rejected by them. There was not a peep out of the Arab world — or out of the so-called Palestinians — over this rejection. Why? Because a Palestinian state was never their agenda. Their agenda was and is the destruction of the Jewish state and the expulsion of the Jews from the Middle East — or failing that, their absolute subjection as a hated minority without access to state power. The reason I remind Mr. Rich is that this connection to Nazi Germany appeared to be relevant to him when he wrote about Prescott Bush’s tenuous connection in 2008. In May 18th of that year as Rich was pontificating about the state of the Presidential election he wrote : Just 36 hours after the Mississippi debacle, Mr. McCain tried to distance himself from the administration by flip-flopping on his signature issue, Iraq, suddenly endorsing just the kind of timetable for withdrawal he has characterized as “surrender” when proposed by Democrats or Mitt Romney. (When Mr. McCain proposes it, he labels it “victory.”) But hardly had Mr. McCain spoken than his message was upstaged by Mr. Bush’s partisan political speech in Israel. The president implied that Mr. Obama would have enabled the Nazis even more foolishly than his own grandfather, Prescott Bush, did in the 1930s when he  maintained “investment relationships with Hitler’s Germany,” as Kevin Phillips delicately describes it in “American Dynasty.” (Emphasis added) If this detail was important enough to commit to the pages of New York Times in 2008, it’s strange that Rich’s New York Magazine Kennedy tongue-bath /Conservative hit piece is notably bereft of such details about the Camelot clan’s Nazi sympathies. Allow me to submit the following entry from Edward Renehan, Jr.’s The Kennedys at War   to the record on Mr. Rich’s behalf. During May of 1938, [Joseph Kennedy Sr.] engaged in extensive discussions with the new German Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s, Herbert von Dirksen. In the midst of these conversations (held without approval from the U.S. State Department), Kennedy advised von Dirksen that President Roosevelt was the victim of”Jewish influence” and was poorly informed as to the philosophy, ambitions and ideals of Hitler’s regime. (The Nazi ambassador subsequently told his bosses that Kennedy was”Germany’s best friend” in London.) … Like his father, Joe Jr. admired Adolf Hitler. Young Joe had come away impressed by Nazi rhetoric after traveling in Germany as a student in 1934. Writing at the time, Joe applauded Hitler’s insight in realizing the German people’s “need of a common enemy, someone of whom to make the goat. Someone, by whose riddance the Germans would feel they had cast out the cause of their predicament. It was excellent psychology, and it was too bad that it had to be done to the Jews. The dislike of the Jews, however, was well-founded. They were at the heads of all big business, in law etc. It is all to their credit for them to get so far, but their methods had been quite unscrupulous … the lawyers and prominent judges were Jews, and if you had a case against a Jew, you were nearly always sure to lose it. … As far as the brutality is concerned, it must have been necessary to use some … .” Rich can be forgiven his omission, I suppose. To those who would have you believe that progressivism sprang forth from the brow of John F. Kennedy Jr., the mythology can be useful, especially when used as weapon with which to smear political opponents.

Reminder to Frank Rich: The Kennedys were anti-semitic Nazi sympathizers

Adolf Hitler’s anti- semitism and militaristic behaviors began years before he led Germany into disarray. New York’s Simon Wiesenthal Center revealed what is believed to be an original copy of Hitler’s first anti- semitic writing. The ” Gemlich letter” was penned in 1919 and seen as the potential launch of  Hitler’s political career (the document is named after the man the letter was addressed to). According to NPR , research still needs to be done to ensure that the letter is, indeed, the original, though the Wiesenthal Center says that the signature looks authentic. This July, the document will be on permanent display at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. The Center obtained this disturbing writing from a dealer for $150,000. Last week, The New York Times reported that scholars have long known about this letter, as a copy has been archived in Munich for some time now. Some skeptics question the authenticity is the recently-released version of the letter. The Times has more : … news that another copy had made its way to Los Angeles met with some skepticism among historians. The market for Hitler memorabilia is notorious for forgeries. “It has to have very good provenance,” said Klaus Lankheit , deputy director of the archive at the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich. “From my experience, I would be very skeptical.” But Othmar Plöckinger , an expert on early Hitler documents, says it appears that the document acquired by the Wiesenthal Center is the original letter written by Hitler and that the one in Munich is a copy made about the same time. Michigan State University has translated the text into English. Below, find just a snippet of Hitler’s discriminatory malice: Through thousands of years of the closest kind of inbreeding, Jews in general have maintained their race and their peculiarities far more distinctly than many of the peoples among whom they have lived. And thus comes the fact that there lives amongst us a non-German, alien race which neither wishes nor is able to sacrifice its racial character or to deny its feeling, thinking, and striving. Nevertheless, it possesses all the political rights we do. If the ethos of the Jews is revealed in the purely material realm, it is even clearer in their thinking and striving. Their dance around the golden calf is becoming a merciless struggle for all those possessions we prize most highly on earth. These troubling words show Hitler’s dislike for the Jews more than 10 years before he assumed power in Germany. It is these views, among others, that drove him to commit unthinkable human atrocities.

CNSNews.com : In making his case that immigration reform is morally imperative, the president quoted the Book of Deuteronomy – comparing illegal immigrants to the Jews in Egypt. “Immigration reform is a moral imperative, and so it’s worth seeking greater understanding from our faith,” said Obama. “As it is written in the Book of Deuteronomy [10:19], ‘Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.’ To me, that verse is a call to show empathy to our brothers and our sisters; to try and recognize ourselves in one another.

Progressives and ‘Blood Libel’

On January 13, 2011, in Uncategorized, by kohler

Palin’s statement is at the link: ” The Great Communicator: Sarah Palin Calls Out Despicable ‘Blood Libel’ .” Progressives are going crazy over the meaning of “blood libel.” See Media Matters, ” Palin, Conservatives Invoke ‘Blood Libel’ Accusation to Attack Their Critics Over AZ Shooting .” Ben Smith notes the background : The phrase “blood libel” was introduced into the debate this week by Instapundit’s Glenn Reynolds, and raised some eyebrows because it typically refers historically to the alleged murder of Christian babies by Jews, and has been used more recently by Israeli’s supporters to refer to accusations against the country. It’s a powerful metaphor, and one that carries the sense of an oppressed minority. Glenn has been responding , and he links to AoSHQ, who destroys progressive criticism : I think many liberal commentators realize that the slime job isn’t working. So they have decided to simply deflect and object to something else about Palin. Now they’re claiming that there is an “uproar” that she used the term “blood libel”. First, there’s no uproar. Yes, the objection appears in a NYTimes blog and all over Daily Kos. But that’s it. Because even their own definition of “blood libel” includes the manner in which Palin used the term. Here’s the NYTimes; I have emphasized the key word: By using the term “blood libel” to describe the criticism about political rhetoric after the shootings, Ms. Palin was inventing a new definition for an emotionally laden phrase. Blood libel is typically used to describe the false accusation that Jews murder Christian children to use their blood in religious rituals, in particular the baking of matzos for passover. The term has been used for centuries as the pretext for anti-Semitism and violent pogroms against Jews. Typically. Typically, but not exclusively , blood libels have been accusations against Jews. But blood libels have also been made historically against Christians — including Catholics and the Knights Templar — witches and pagans, and, more modernly, Satanists. Liberals need something to mumble about, so goshdarnitow sometime between yesterday and today the term came to apply only to the Jews. They’d like you to believe this is “another” example of Palin’s ignorance, even though, as I said, by their own definition her use of the term is appropriate. As with their response to the Arizona shooting, facts-be-damned they’ve got a story and they’re sticking to it. And see Alan Dershowitz : The term “blood libel” has taken on a broad metaphorical meaning in public discourse. Although its historical origins were in theologically based false accusations against the Jews and the Jewish People, its current usage is far broader. I myself have used it to describe false accusations against the State of Israel by the Goldstone Report. There is nothing improper and certainly nothing anti-Semitic in Sarah Palin using the term to characterize what she reasonably believes are false accusations that her words or images may have caused a mentally disturbed individual to kill and maim. The fact that two of the victims are Jewish is utterly irrelevant to the propriety of using this widely used term. After three days of television shows focusing on the work and impact of George Soros, the wave of Beck criticism crested Thursday night with the leader of the Anti-Defamation League issuing a strong denunciation of the programs: Throughout three programs this week, Mr. Beck has portrayed Mr. Soros, a billionaire investor and philanthropist, as a “puppet master” who is “notorious for collapsing economies and regimes all around the world” and whose “next target” is the United States. Citing Mr. Soros’s statements about the decline of the dollar, Mr. Beck said, “Not only does he want to bring America to her knees, financially, he wants to reap obscene profits off us as well.” Abraham H. Foxman , national director of the Anti-Defamation League, took issue with Mr. Beck’s depiction of Mr. Soros as a “Jewish boy helping sending the Jews to the death camps,” calling it “offensive” and “horrific.” On Tuesday on his Fox program, watched by about 2.8 million people, Mr. Beck said that during the Holocaust, the 14-year-old Mr. Soros “used to go around with this anti-Semite and deliver papers to the Jews and confiscate their property and then ship them off.” Mr. Beck continued: “I am certainly not saying that George Soros enjoyed that, even had a choice. I mean, he’s 14 years old. He was surviving. So I’m not making a judgment. That’s between him and God.” He also said that “many people” would call Mr. Soros “an anti-Semite,” though “I will not.” On Thursday’s program, Beck revisited the issue and focused on how Soros has himself described that time in his life: On his radio program Friday morning, Beck talked about a letter he recently received from the ADL’s Foxman. Beck noted that his office provided a copy of the letter to The New York Times prior to the publication of their story. The contents of the letter were not included in the article. This is the key segment from the Friday morning radio show:

Don’t neglect your history. I recommend, especially in these troubled times, Saul Friedlander’s, The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945 (Vol 2) . I wrote previously about the book here .

Have You Read it? The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945

I’m going to have to stop off at Barnes and Noble to read the whole thing, since Time posts only an excerpt , but I trust Phyllis Chesler’s analysis : The Jewish insistence on life may be the key to our survival as a people despite ceaseless persecution. It might be the lesson, the model, for all humanity in an era of genocides, civil wars, torture chambers, tyrannies, and totalitarian regimes. Why is TIME turning things on their head and refusing to recognize the courage and the heroism of Jewish Israelis who choose to live in the moment when the moment is all they have? Against all odds, the Jews simply refuse to give up. Added : I see Time ‘s essay is garnering some attention around the ‘sphere . See Victor Davis Hanson, ” For the Jews in Israel, Money Trumps All? “: I know it’s commonplace to read in the latest issue of Time or Newsweek that Obama is a god, that Islamophobic Americans are collectively prejudiced against Muslims, that the response after 9/11 was overblown and unnecessary (over 30 subsequent terrorist plots have been foiled, and, for some reason, renditions, tribunals, Guantanamo, Predators, intercepts, etc., have all been embraced by the Obama administration), but the recent Time piece on Israel by a Karl Vick is probably the most anti-Semitic essay I have ever read in a mainstream publication. Hanson’s on to something. See also Bret Stephens, ” Time magazine adds its voice to the chorus of those attempting to delegitimize the Jewish state .” Here’s more, from Daniel Gordis, ” Acceptable in Polite Society .”
