What If Ron Paul Wins The GOP Nomination?

On December 17, 2011, in Uncategorized, by DUFFYAPRIL35

Yesterday, Ed Morrissey asked the question “Can Ron Paul Win?” The article includes quite a bit of information about Ron Paul, none of it good. Ed brought up the racist articles published in Ron Paul’s newsletter (also check Flopping Aces for the old original info). Paul supporters will say “that’s old news”, and “he didn’t

Perry, Romney Spar in CNN Debate

On October 19, 2011, in Uncategorized, by ggallin

Ed Morrissey has a great report, ” Who won the Vegas fight? “, and also at Michelle’s, ” Fight Club: GOP candidates brawl on CNN “: Romney and Perry — both flip-flopping squishes on immigration enforcement — tried to out-tough each other on the issue. Perry resurrected Romney’s illegal alien problem from 2007. (See here for background.) Romney counter-attacked by calling out Perry’s opposition to E-verify. Bottom line. They are both, in Perry’s words, “conservatives of convenience” on the issue. What is it with the GOP and immigration cross-dressers? Ugh . The report’s at The Morning Call , ” Dismal poll numbers for Obama in PA .” And also from Ed Morrissey, ” Obama approval rating in PA plummets to … 35% .” (Via Memeorandum .) And that’s a real nice analysis. Pennsylvania’s a “deep-blue state” apparently, with Democrats holding a 50.9/36.9 registration advantage over Republicans late last year. This can’t be good news. But then again, once this administration achieved the Obama downgrade, I said that’s all she wrote. I don’t think Obama will be reelected.

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) — A woman was arraigned in a Boston hospital bed Friday on accusations that she killed her 8-year-old son and tried to commit suicide by lighting a hibachi grill inside a bedroom in their apartment. Li Rong Zhang remained hospitalized under guard after she was ordered held without bail on a murder charge. Li was arrested one day after her 16-year-old son found her and another son, Brandon Young, unconscious in their home in Quincy, south of Boston, authorities said. Firefighters who broke through a barricaded door into a second-floor room found the younger boy lying on the bed and his 39-year-old mother on the floor Thursday afternoon, Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said. A preliminary autopsy was completed, and investigators were awaiting additional test results before ruling on a cause of death, Morrissey said. “We don’t have the medical examiner’s report, but have sufficient evidence to at least bring charges against one individual,” Morrissey said. “The investigation is ongoing.” Investigators have determined that there were no problems with the heating in the apartment and there was no indication the hibachi grill was being used for heat, authorities said. It also didn’t appear that anything was being cooked on the grill, Quincy Police Chief Paul Keenan said. The poisonous carbon monoxide fumes from the grill were mostly confined in the barricaded bedroom and did not reach smoke detectors elsewhere in the apartment, Keenan said. The woman’s attorney, James Doyle, said a not-guilty plea was entered on her behalf. Li is grief-stricken in the intensive care unit, Doyle said before declining further comment. A neighbor, Susan Sullivan, told WCVB-TV that she heard a fire alarm go off in the basement of the apartment building, but did not see or smell any smoke. She said she called the Quincy Housing Authority before leaving for work. “When I pulled in after work, I saw the fire engine pull up, and then I saw them pull the little boy out,” she told the TV station. She said she was “devastated” and wished she could have done something to prevent the death. In 2005, police responded to a report of a family disturbance, a verbal argument between Li and her husband, but no restraining order was obtained, Keenan said. Morrissey said he did not know the woman’s exact condition, “but when she is capable and able to be removed she will be taken to another secure facility.” She is due in Quincy District Court on Jan. 28.

Suicide at Virginia Quarterly Review

On September 4, 2010, in Uncategorized, by If Bush Did It

At LAT : On July 30, Kevin Morrissey printed a note, gathered his identification and called the Charlottesville, Va., police to report a shooting at the coal tower, a local landmark. When they arrived, it was Morrissey they found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, his papers laid out neatly beside him. Morrissey was the 52-year-old managing editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, an award-winning literary journal published by the University of Virginia. He had worked at the journal since 2004, handling accounting, payments, contracts and other administrative details. “Kevin’s job was his life,” said co-worker Waldo Jaquith. Morrissey’s death might have affected only his small circle of friends and colleagues, but it has also had an unexpected impact, spurring the university to conduct an audit of the finances and management of the VQR. And now, a month after Morrissey’s death, the Virginia Quarterly Review is on indefinite hiatus. The move follows a stream of reports and extended online discussion about Morrissey’s suicide. Those reports have focused on the VQR workplace and have been critical of the magazine’s editor, Ted Genoways. Genoways, who has been locked out of the office by university officials since Morrissey’s death, has been labeled a “workplace bully” in media reports with few actual details. The “Today” show reported that Genoways was “under investigation for allegedly driving one of his employees to suicide.” But although contributing editors, writers and associates found Genoways “professional, tactful and respectful” — as two dozen wrote in an August letter of support — it is clear from comments after Morrissey’s death that most of his five-person staff was, to some degree, unhappy. It is their complaints that have dominated media accounts of Morrissey’s death and the subsequent cloud over the VQR. RTWT.
