[caption id="attachment_236917" align="alignright" width="289" caption="Lindsay Wood read the Bible to the man who slashed her throat, police say. (Image source: WSOC-TV)"] [/caption] Police say a North Carolina woman spent more than an hour reading the Bible to her attacker -- after he slashed her throat with a knife. Lindsay Wood and her 15-year-old son had just returned home from church Wednesday night. Wood asked her son to collect the trash can from the curb, and while he was doing so a man he didn't know rushed past him, the Shelby Star reported . The man and Wood spoke briefly. Then, he pulled out a knife and sliced the right side of her neck. After the attack, Wood started talking to the man while her son stayed hidden outside. She tried to reason with him, offering him her car and money. When he didn't take either, she began reading Bible scriptures. "She even invited him to her church," Shelby Police Capt. Rick Stafford told the Star. “He kept saying he was sorry, and then walked away.” Before he left, the man turned on an outside faucet and carved a six-point star into Wood's car, Charlotte NBC affiliate WCNC-TV reported . Wood is in stable condition, though she is unable to speak following surgery. She required 20 to 25 stitches to close the wound. According to WCNC, police do not believe Wood and her attacker knew each other, and have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood. "We want him off the street," Stafford said. Wood's neighbor, Faye Cooke, described Wood and her son as "good Christian folk who keep to themselves.” “I have no idea why something like this would happen to her,” Cooke told the Star. “There’s just no reason.”

NORTH GREENFIELD, Ind. (The Blaze/AP) -- Steven Tyler says he meant to sing the national anthem like that. The Aerosmith frontman and "American Idol" judge endured plenty of jabs after his rendition of the anthem at the AFC Championship game last month, but Tyler says he doesn't understand what all the fuss was about. "I don't know. As I said before, I put emphasis on, 'In the land of the free' and I went up," Tyler explained. "Oddly enough I hit the note so I don't know what they are talking about. I emphasized 'free' which was for freedom. It was well thought out prior to. I wasn't messing with American tradition." Enduring negative criticism at that football game did not stop Tyler from enjoying pre-Super Bowl festivities with Carrie Underwood. The duo is in Indianapolis for CMT's "Crossroads," which brings acts from different genres together to perform. It's not the first time the two have sung together: They performed a duet at the Academy of Country Music Awards last year. "I just love to sing and I love her stuff. A good friend of mine writes songs with her. When I heard 'Undo It,' I said, 'What is that?' That is an Aerosmith song, right? I am going to finish recording that with you. He said, 'No, I wrote that with Carrie, it is coming out in a week,'" he said. "I met her and it was all over after that, once I looked into her eyes. She opened her mouth and sang and she is that good. I loved singing with her." The two rehearsed Thursday evening in North Greenfield, just outside of Indianapolis, ahead of their scheduled Saturday show (it will air the same night on the network). The former "Idol" champ says she enjoys working with the lively Tyler because he "makes everybody all warm and fuzzy." While Tyler, closely connected to Boston for years, made clear he was rooting for the New England Patriots in Sunday's game against the New York Giants, Underwood demurred when asked to name her pick. In her house, she says hockey is the main focus, since husband Mike Fisher is a professional hockey player in Nashville. "He is Canadian so I have had to switch his focus from so much hockey to a little football because we watch a lot of hockey," she said. "I love watching him and I love watching the Predators." To refresh, below is Tyler's rendition:

From Ronald Brownstein, at National Journal , " Rocky Terrain: Obama's Electoral College Map Grows Steeper ": The Gallup state-by-state average approval numbers for 2011 released this week don't necessarily predict where President Obama will finish on Election Day, but they do measure the hill he must climb to win re-election. The most important number in presidential elections, of course, is 270 - the number of Electoral College votes it takes to win. The best way to examine the Gallup numbers is to measure them against that yardstick. In 2010, if you sorted down from Obama's highest approval rating to his lowest, he could reach 270 Electoral College votes by carrying the 22 states plus the District of Columbia where his approval rating stood at 46.9 percent or more. Since one of the states above that line was Mississippi, a state Obama has almost no chance of carrying in practice, a more realistic scenario was that to reach an Electoral College majority he would have to carry those 21 states plus Virginia, where his approval rating stood at 46.6 percent. That would have been challenging, but not imposingly so. Political strategists used to believe that incumbents were unlikely to win elections (or carry states) where their approval rating lagged below 50 percent; but given the widespread cynicism about politicians many strategists on both sides believe the tipping point is now around 47 percent. Below that number, incumbents are a distinct underdog; above it, they are favored, with the ground tilting much more toward them once they cross 50 percent. In the 2011 numbers, the situation looks much more difficult for Obama. From 2010 to 2011, Gallup found, his average approval ratings dropped in every state except Connecticut, Maine and (oddly enough) Wyoming. As a result, to reach 270 Electoral College votes based on the 2011 numbers, he would need to win 20 states plus the District of Columbia where his approval rating stands at 44.5 percent or more. Since one of the states above that line is Georgia, which is also a stretch for Obama in practice, to reach 270 he would more likely need to carry Oregon and North Carolina, where his approval ratings stood at 44.5 percent and 43.7 percent, respectively. (It's worth filing away that the scenario based on either year's numbers - Virginia and North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue -- the woman who wanted to cancel congressional elections -- has decided to cancel her own. After signaling that she would seek a second term in 2012, Perdue shocked the political world Jan. 26 when she scuttled her re-election bid. The decision has implications far beyond the confines of Tar Heel politics. Perdue, a Democrat and the state's first female governor, ranked as one of the weakest incumbent governors this year. She rode President Obama's coattails in 2008 to defeat former Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory by a whisker. Without the benefit of Obama's turnout machine, Perdue would have lost. Her chances were even dimmer in 2012, so she dropped out. Her official reason was to fight for public education, which Democrats claim was damaged by a budget approved by the Republican-controlled legislature last year. "It is clear to me that my race for re-election will only further politicize the fight to adequately fund our schools," Perdue said. "A re-election campaign in this already divisive environment will make it more difficult to find bipartisan solutions." It was a rationale that induced collective head scratching across the state. Even many Democrats doubted the effectiveness of surrendering the war to win it. But all of them are relieved that Perdue will no longer top the ballot with Obama. Perdue has consistently trailed McCrory, the presumed GOP gubernatorial nominee in 2012, in recent polls. Perdue's departure means the gubernatorial race will be more competitive. That's good news for Democrats; plenty of bad news accompanies it. Perdue's late announcement -- coming three weeks before candidate filing begins for the primary in May -- left North Carolina's Democratic Party in disarray. There is no presumed successor to the governor's office, prompting a dozen Democrats to voice interest in the job publicly. No doubt many more pondered the possibility privately. The lieutenant governor's post is seen as a stepping-stone to the governor's office. But the current lieutenant governor, Walter Dalton, is a nonentity to many Democrats. Even more, his political history has liberals wary. Before being elected lieutenant governor in 2008, Dalton was a moderate to conservative Democrat in the state Senate, elected from a rural district. In 2005, he co-sponsored a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and civil unions, a position that he tried to walk back this week. The sin of supporting traditional marriage might be too great for orthodox liberals. Democrats had hoped that current Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, an African American, would jump into the race. Foxx had a lot going for him: He won a second term as mayor in November by a hefty margin, and is seen as an up-and-coming political rock star in the vein of Obama. His popularity in Charlotte, North Carolina's most populous city, would have struck a blow to McCrory. But Foxx opted to fight another day and passed on a gubernatorial bid. Enter Erskine Bowles. Yes, that Erskine Bowles, of Simpson-Bowles debt commission fame. Shortly after Perdue announced her retirement, pundits began speculating that Bowles might enter the race and immediately jump to the front of the pack. Polling backed up that assertion. A survey by the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling found Bowles and McCrory in a statistical dead heat. That was big news: Perdue trailed the former Charlotte mayor by double digits, and no other Democrat who would potentially run performs well in a hypothetical matchup. But Democrats were dealt another blow Thursday when Bowles announced that he wouldn't seek the governor's office. If he had thrown his hat into the ring, his background, experience, and name recognition would have made him the most able challenger to McCrory. That leaves two candidates who have announced so far: Dalton, and N.C. House member Bill Faison, who hails from the liberal bastion of Chapel Hill. Faison will make plenty of noise -- he publicly called for Perdue to forego a second term, and caught grief from fellow Democrats for doing it -- but he doesn't have a prayer. It remains to be seen whether Democrats will coalesce around Dalton or opt for a more liberal alternative. Liberals' favorite pick would be U.S. Rep. Brad Miller, first elected to represent the state's 13th Congressional District in 2002. Republicans all but drew Miller out of his seat this year, packing the district with more GOP voters. It's doubtful whether Miller could be successful in a statewide campaign, though. His politics have made him one of the most liberal white Democrats in the South. On the national stage, Perdue's decision proved a bit of a curveball to Democrats. Yes, they wanted her out of the way -- there is even speculation that Obama himself was responsible for shuttering her re-election bid, telling her that he couldn't win North Carolina with her on the ballot -- but this is also an embarrassment. When Democrats descend on Charlotte in early September for their convention, it will be in a state where the sitting Democratic governor is quitting due to unpopularity. That can't help Obama in a must-win state. In the end, Perdue's decision turned a competitive election year in the Tar Heel State into a wild rollercoaster ride. Democrats are happy that Perdue is gone, and they feel renewed momentum going into the gubernatorial election with a fresh start. Republicans are even more optimistic with their champion McCrory. It's already a messy year. It'll only get more so.

Has the answer to a quick, painless, reversible male contraceptive been in doctors' offices and commercially available for decades? One study says yes. Therapeutic ultrasounds machines, which are currently used to relieve injured joints with heat, according to the study by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill researchers, could someday be a viable form of contraceptives for men. According to the press release, the researchers were able to reduce sperm counts for a long period of time -- two and a half months -- in rats by giving the rodents' testicles just two 15 minute doses of the ultrasound heat. [caption id="attachment_233579" align="aligncenter" width="394" caption="The seminiferous tubule on the left is from a testis that was not treated with ultrasound while the tubule on the right is from a testis that was treated with ultrasound. Note that the tubule from the control testis has many darkly stained germ cell nuclei. In contrast, the ultrasound-treated tubule is completely lacking testicular sperm and has lost almost all immature germ cells. (Photo: James Tsuruta/ Paul Dayton)"] [/caption] Here's how the treatment works: The best results came from undergoing two sessions, each consisting of 15 minutes of ultrasound, two days apart. During the sessions, the testes were placed in a cup of saline to provide conduction between the ultrasound transducer and skin. The researchers were not able to continue their study for long enough to see when, or whether, fertility would return. But they knew it was effective: microscopic examination showed dramatic changes after just two weeks. Normally, testes are full of many layers of cells developing into sperm, but now the tubes of the testis were almost empty. "Sperm production is very robust; this ensures the survival of a species. It's really difficult to find a way to turn off the production of sperm, but ultrasound seems to do the trick," Dr. [James] Tsuruta [said]. "There is something special about heating with ultrasound — it caused 10-times lower sperm counts than just applying heat." [caption id="attachment_233599" align="alignright" width="269" caption="This ultrasound unit was used in the rat study. (Image: NewMaleContraction.org)"] [/caption] A different set of researchers showed that this technique also worked in primates -- and was reversible. Dr. Catherine VandeVoort from the University of California-Davis who led the primate study spoke about the slightly awkward research they had to conduct to see if it would work in the monkeys: "The monkeys didn't seem to mind the treatment a bit, but we were having a rough time of it. Thirty minutes of treatment three times a week is a lot of monkey testicular massage. We felt pretty silly, and it didn't help when the techs would come around and wonder what kind of research we were doing! We were relieved when we finally saw an effect." A third set of researchers in Italy tested the technique on dogs in the hopes of permanent sterilization to reduce the stray dog population. The press release states that using five doses of the therapy on the dogs did achieve permanent sterility, leading researchers to consider this as an alternative to surgical vasectomies. It also leads some to be cautious about using ultrasound as a temporary form of birth control: there is a risk for permanent sterilization; couples have no definite way knowing when sperm counts would come back up again; and there could be potential effects on sperm structure that could lead to a damaged embryo: "This is an interesting development in a challenging indication," says regulatory consultant Gary Gamerman of Seraphim Life Sciences. Though much remains to be done, there's nothing inherent to the method that would make ultrasound dead in the water from a regulatory standpoint. "The only concern is proof of safety and durability of response. As long as it prevents fertile sperm, is overall safe and doesn't cause secondary safety or adverse sexual effects, there wouldn't necessarily be anything that would hold it back. You just have to do the studies." Clearly, more studies would need to be done before this is considered as a permanent or temporary form of contraceptive for men. But as New Male Contraception's website states, "there is nothing preventing men from buying a $1,300 ultrasound machine online and trying it." [H/T Popular Science ]

From Phyllis Chesler, at Fox News, " Will Guilty Verdict in Canadian 'Honor Killing' Trial Be a Turning Point for Justice? ": Western-style domestic violence and even domestically violent femicide is not the same as an honor killing. For example, Westerners rarely kill their young daughters nor do Western families of origin conspire or collaborate in such murders. While Sikhs, and Hindus, (mainly in India), do commit honor killings, the majority of such murders in the West (91%) are Muslim-on-Muslim crimes. The high-profile Shafia case may be a watershed decision in terms of Canada’s long standing Multiculturalism Policy which was passed in 1971 under Prime Minister Trudeau and legally enshrined in 1988 as the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. According to Dr. Salim Mansur, a Muslim Canadian professor and author, such policies are ultimately “racist.” They keep immigrants confined to their “group” and do not encourage members to become “individuals” and “citizens” of a modern liberal democracy. Although some have called for a special “honor killing” law, it is important to note that the Shafias were tried and convicted under existing Canadian law. They were not tried for committing a culturally approved “honor killing,” but for having conspired to commit a cold-blooded and pre-planned murder on Canadian soil. So, too, were Muslim-Canadian Aqsa Parvez’s father, Mohammed, and her brother, Waqas, who were tried and convicted for murdering the 16-year-old girl because she refused to wear the hijab and other traditional clothing. Her mother, who was not tried, lured her daughter home from a shelter for battered women to her death. After the Shafia jury was individually polled, (it was a unanimous decision and the evidence of guilt was overwhelming), the Justice, Robert Maranger said “It is hard to imagine a more heinous crime, a cold-blooded and shameful crime, (committed because of) a sick notion about honor that has no place in this society.” And in a statement following the verdict, Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson called honor killings a practice that is "barbaric and unacceptable in Canada....This government is committed to protecting women and other vulnerable persons from all forms of violence and to hold perpetrators accountable for their acts." Defense lawyer David Crowe has vowed to appeal. The accused continue to insist they are innocent. I hope that Canadian and North American Muslim associations and experts will welcome this decision in which three murdered Muslim girls and one murdered Muslim woman were considered important enough to merit a long and expensive trial in the search for justice.
[caption id="attachment_232320" align="alignright" width="306" caption="Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said Saturday President Barack Obama and other liberals should "get the hell out of the United States of America." (AP)"] [/caption] Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) had a strong message Saturday for President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz: "Get the hell out." West made the comments during a speech at a Palm Beach County GOP event in West Palm Beach. "This is a battlefield that we must stand upon. And we need to let President Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and my dear friend, chairman of the Democrat National Committee, we need to let them know that Florida ain't on the table," West said. The audience was booing by the time West got to Pelosi's name. "Take your message of equality of achievement, take your message of economic dependency, take your message of enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the American people somewhere else," he continued. "You can take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it to the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America." As the audience cheered and many rose to their feet, West added, "Yeah I said 'hell.'" "This is not about 1 percent or 99 percent. This is about 100 percent. It's about 100 percent America. And I will not stand back and watch anyone defame, degrade or destroy that which my father fought for, my older brother, my father-in-law, myself, my nephew and all my friend still in uniform," he said. "I will not allow President Obama to take the United States of America and destroy it. If that means I'm the No. 1 target for the Democrat Party, all I got to say is one thing: Bring it on, baby."

Back in November, I spotlighted Obama’s half-billion-dollar crony drug deal involving a no-bid contract with politically-connected SIGA. Refresher course here . In November, Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill — chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Contracting and Oversight and up for re-election in less than a year — asked HHS to review the contract. Last week, the NYPost reported that SIGA execs dumped stock when they learned the contract would be far less than they anticipated last spring. Today, GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina asked the HHS Inspector General to investigate: “Yesterday afternoon I submitted my second letter to the Inspector General at the Department of Health and Human Services regarding apparent gross impropriety on behalf of the Obama Administration.” “The more I investigate this deal, the more shocked I become at the potential corruption and insider influence taking place at the highest levels of our government. I cannot help but see the similarities between this case and the Solyndra scandal, since both involve rewarding companies tied to Obama donors, billions in taxpayer dollars, and insider dealing.” “The decisions made by HHS have caused a legitimate small business in North Carolina to be denied a level playing field to provide smallpox treatments in the event of a national emergency. I will be very interested to see how the Administration explains their actions in awarding a billion-dollar corporation such a substantial contract when it falsely claimed to be a small business.” Federal law requires that a certain amount of grants for this research and production be set aside for small businesses. In turn, small businesses will compete for these contracts and “grant awards” while convincing the government that their products will provide the most effective treatment and protections, at the lowest cost to the American taxpayer. The two companies at the center of this – SIGA and Chimerix – competed for this award and submitted their own proposals for drugs to combat smallpox. SIGA’s small business status was challenged and the SBA ruled twice that they were “Other Than Small,” and therefore ineligible for a small business set-aside contract. But rather than acknowledging SBA’s decision, HHS pulled the small business set-aside and reissued the contract as a sole-source, non-compete to SIGA Corp. for $2.8 billion. MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings, Inc. is a corporation wholly owned by Ronald Perelman, and TransTech Pharma, Inc. (a privately-held drug discovery company controlled by MacAndrews & Forbes). In November 2003, Perelman announced he would invest $10 million through MacAndrews and Forbes into SIGA Technologies – at the time a tiny biotech company that was developing oral drugs to prevent and treat diseases, including smallpox and anthrax. Scandals? What scandals?
