Mitt Romney’s rivals took aim at him in the Sunday-morning debate, but it’s hard to see a scenario where he loses all of his currently gargantuan lead in New Hampshire : 20 percentage points, 24 percentage points, 15 percentage points, 24 percentage points, and 17 percentage points in the past five polls. Then there’s South Carolina , the kind of conservative, heavily evangelical state one would expect Romney to have a tougher time in . . . where Romney leads by 7 percentage points, 3 percentage points, and 18 percentage points in the last three polls. Gallup: America Has Never Had More Independents

On January 9, 2012, in Uncategorized, by HansonLorna33

File this away when contemplating the sample of future nationwide polls: The percentage of Americans identifying as political independents increased in 2011, as is common in a non-election year, although the 40 percent who did so is the highest Gallup has measured, by one percentage point. More Americans continue to identify as Democrats than as Republicans, 31 percent to 27 percent. Keep reading this post . . .

Santorum Surging in Iowa?

On December 27, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Richard Riker

Well, Santorum’s pumped up for a big showing next week, although he’s not quite going all in to predict a top spot in the caucuses. Here’s the video from Linkmaster Smith : But check Flopping Aces, ” Newt Implodes As Santorum Surges .” Meanwhile, Robert Stacy McCain is on the ground with first-hand reports. See, ” Republicans With Shotguns .” BONUS : Mark Blumenthal has a big analysis on the polling situation in Iowa, ” Iowa Caucus Polls: Ron Paul And Mitt Romney Lead, But Surprises Likely ” (via Memeorandum ). Added : Tina Korbe has this, ” Santorum: If I finish “dead last” in Iowa, I’ll drop out .” Yeah, maybe Santorum’s just putting on the happy face. He couldn’t even bag that Steve King endorsement, so what can you do?

A new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll finds Obama’s approval rating unchanged at 40 percent, and adds , “among Independents, the level of strong disapproval for the American president outranks the level of strong approval by a 6-to-1 margin (42 percent to 7 percent).” This is an online survey, but the pollster notes that the sample is weighted to be a “representative national sample of 1,031 American adults.”

As Sen. Harry Reid declares that private-sector job growth is doing “just fine,” the AP poll finds that the percentage of Americans who describe the economy as “very poor” has reached a new high . A sizable majority — more than 7 in 10 — believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and, in a new high, 43 percent describe the nation’s economy as “very poor,” according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. Among those surveyed, less than 40 percent say Obama’s proposed remedies for high unemployment would increase jobs significantly. Keep reading this post . . .

I don’t think either of the survey results cited in Mike Allen’s Politico newsletter are really that surprising, considering the state of the economy, etc., but he calls them “sobering” for Democrats: THIS CYCLE’S BIGGEST SURVEY OF LATINO VOTERS : Campaigns and party committees are getting confidential briefings on the findings of a bipartisan poll for Univision of 1,500 likely Latino voters, conducted by Mark Mellman of The Mellman Group (a Democratic firm) and Dave Sackett of The Tarrance Group (Republican). About one-third of the interviews were conducted in Spanish, and the poll oversampled in CA, TX, FL, NV, NM and AZ. Playbook was provided an exclusive look at the findings: Keep reading this post . . .
