ContributorNetwork – COMMENTARY | The Heritage Foundation’s 2012 Index of Dependence on Government draws the unsurprising conclusion Americans are more dependent on government than ever before. While the conservative think tank’s report is cited by sources such as Investor’s Daily as evidence of failed Obama administration policies, such political manipulation detracts from the report’s essential message.

Great, just as the Obama administration confirmed that the U.S. will end its combat role at the end of 2013. The news is at London’s Daily Mail , ” So is it all worth it? Secret files reveal Taliban will retake control of Afghanistan when NATO troops withdraw “: The Taliban is set to return to power in Afghanistan when British and Coalition forces end their combat role in 2014, a damning leaked confidential report reveals. Despite 10 years of fighting by NATO forces and their huge sacrifices – 397 members of the British military alone have been killed and thousands wounded – the report says that in the past year there has been unprecedented interest, even from within the Afghan government, in joining the Taliban. And it points accusingly at Afghanistan’s neighbour Pakistan, a key ally of NATO, where powerful elements in the security and intelligence services support the Taliban and describes how insurgent leaders maintain homes within the heart of the capital Islamabad. Based on 27,000 interviews with over 4,000 Taliban and Al Qaeda prisoners, the detailed report effectively questions the Coalition’s own assessment that it is winning the war in Afghanistan. The report – The State of the Taliban – was described as ‘devastating’ yesterday (W) by former soldier Ian Sadler, whose son Jack, a 21-year-old reservist serving with the Honourable Artillery Company, died in a roadside bomb blast in Helmand in December 2007. ‘It has been a waste of time operating in the way that the British have,’ he said, ‘Hearing details of the report makes me wonder why our soldiers were sent there in the way they were and the cost that has been paid.’ The report compiled by US forces describes how weapons and vehicles given to Afghan forces have in turn been passed on to the Taliban and says that Pakistan’s feared Inter-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) is actively colluding with the insurgents by actually directing attacks. Continue reading . I can’t help but think that we’re screwed. Secretary of State Rice, upon leaving office, warned that if we wanted another 9/11, all we had to do was abandon Afghanistan. Let’s hope she was wrong. I’ll have more later.

Well, I can’t imagine when a teacher would have time to sleep, although one semester when I had a night class, after I held my office hours in the afternoon, I’d lie down on the floor to rest before going back out to teach. But that’s not what this is about, at Blazing Cat Fur and Jawa Report :

Students May Not Take Pictures of Sleeping Teachers
It wasn’t my favorite rendition, but he started to belt it out pretty good toward the end. At TMZ, ” Steven Tyler’s National Anthem: Did It Suck? ” And the full clip’s at Bleacher Report, ” Ravens vs. Patriots Video: Watch Steven Tyler Butcher the National Anthem .”

Given Mitt Romney has yet to publicly disclose his full tax returns (he says he might in April), it’s not exactly known what his charitable donations have been. But a new report by ABC says his family charity, the Tyler Foundation, gave $600,000 to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2009. That’s some heavy tithing. And if that’s 10 percent (the suggested giving amount in the Christian Bible) of Romney’s income for 2009, he made $6 million that year. In the past give years, Romney’s charity has donated a total $4 million to the church, according to the report.

New York University student Sara Ackerman rejected the Occupy Wall Street assignment of Professor Caitlin Zaloom . Pamela has the report, ” Professor Forced NYU Student to Go to #OWS Against Her Will for Class Requirement .” I have some questions about Ackerman. For example, was her course a requirement, and if not, why not just drop the class if she opposed the ethnography assignment on Occupy Wall Street? And her demand that Professor Zaloom be fired is a bit much. That said, it’s alleged that the university was ready to giver her an “A” in the course in exchange for her keeping quiet about the matter. That’d be hush money, if true, and obviously those offering such payments have something to hide (the administration denies it). See the original article, ” NYU Student Weaves Elaborate Email-Drama, Beefs With Administration Over OWS And Student Ethics .” (The e-mails are at the link, and Ackerman appears perfectly lucid to me.) Whatever happened, my hunch is that folks at NYU couldn’t believe Ackerman wasn’t down with the program — and you know how progressives react when conservatives deviate from the accepted narrative: KABOOM!! These f-kers bring down the hammer of PC totalitarianism and progressive hate and recrimination. They libel and smear dissenters as “unhinged” and “threatening” — Ackerman’s mental health was questioned — and the university threatened her with “disciplinary action.” And for what? Ackerman claimed that she wanted an alternative assignment for fear of her safety. As the report indicates: Sara says she refused to go down because of ethical disagreements and concerns about “the criminals, drug addicts, mentally ill people” that were there. Well, considering the dregs of society populating OWS, I can’t say I blame her. Either way, the reaction across the institutional leftosphere is a stark reminder of the deep divisions in society over the scope of decency and freedom of conscience. The progs practically want Ackerman’s scalp. See, for example Huffington Post, ” NYU’s Sara Ackerman Tries to Get Professor Fired Over Occupy Wall Street Assignment .” And Sydney Brownstone, at The L , rips into Ackerman for her evil representation of “the degree of segregation by economic status in which this country is currently steeped.” See: ” NYU Student Goes Apeshit Over OWS Assignment, Reaches Out to Lady Gaga, TV Talk Shows on Facebook .” And more over the top headlining at Gawker, ” The Crazy Department-Wide Emails That Everyone at NYU Is Talking About ,” and New York Magazine , ” NYU Student Flips Out Over Occupy Wall Street Assignment .”
