I’ve mentioned it before. My dad took me to Philippe’s when I was a kid. I took PJ Media editor David Swindle there last September . Now here’s the news at Los Angeles Times , ” End of an era: Philippe’s raising price on 9-cent cup of coffee “: Philippe’s is best known for its legendary French dip sandwiches. But for regulars, nothing speaks to the eatery’s historic L.A. feel than the 9-cent coffee on the menu. And the one extra cent of tax. Since 1977, the legion of longtime customers at the Alameda Street restaurant had grown accustomed to putting a dime on the counter and getting a hot cup of coffee in return. But on Wednesday, management posted a sign on the door that came as a surprise: Starting Feb. 2, the price of an eight-ounce brew is going up 400% — to 45 cents. They say the price of coffee is such that the restaurant no longer can keep the price so low. “It’s been a tradition,” said Mark Massengill, whose family has run the restaurant for four generations. “We’ve always tried to provide a tremendous value in the food and coffee.” And, he said, coffee will become included in the price of a breakfast and, even after the hike, two quarters for a coffee is still a bargain. Patrons didn’t balk at the new price. Many said they were surprised it has stayed low for so long. It’s just that not much at Philippe’s has changed over the decades. And when things do, the customers notice.

From Robert Stacy McCain, at The American Spectator : JOHNSTON, Iowa — Rick Santorum made a bold prediction here Friday night: The Pittsburgh Steelers will go all the way to the Super Bowl for a rematch with the Green Bay Packers. The former Pennsylvania senator was enjoying a rare moment of relaxation on the campaign trail here in Iowa, where voters will gather Tuesday night to cast the first real votes that count toward the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Santorum was wearing a University of Iowa Hawkeyes cap at the Okoboji Grille, where he gathered with supporters to watch the Hawkeyes play the Oklahoma Sooners in the Insight Bowl. When he arrived at the restaurant in Johnston, a suburb of Des Moines, Santorum was swarmed by reporters, photographers, and TV cameramen who have swooped down on his campaign in the past week as polls began indicating that he was surging ahead in the pack of GOP candidates. Most of the reporters had left the restaurant (and the Hawkeyes were well on their way to a 31-14 loss to the Sooners) by the time I had the chance to ask Santorum about his beloved Steelers. “We will beat the Browns this week,” he said, sitting in front of a half-finished platter of nachos. “My prediction is, both the Patriots will lose to the Bills and the Ravens will lose to the Bengals and we will be the Number One seed in the AFC playoffs.” But while the underdog-turned-contender was willing to risk prognosticating the NFL all the way to the Super Bowl, he has remained hesitant to predict how he’ll finish in Tuesday’s caucuses. Santorum obviously wants to exceed expectations, but the poll numbers and media buzz surrounding his campaign are making it hard to suppress those expectations. Sunday morning’s Des Moines Register carried a big front-page headline: “Romney, Paul lead; Santorum closes in,” with two subheads, “Poll shows three-way race with two days to go,” and “Late spurt ‘another stunning turn.’” The latter subhead was a partial quote from Republican strategist David Polyansky, who told the Register ‘s Jennifer Jacobs, “Few saw this bombshell coming. In an already unpredictable race this is another stunning turn of political fortune.” Continue reading . Lots of developments in the Herman Cain sexual harassment scandal. CNN has this, ” Attorney for Cain accuser: Cain is lying .” Also, at Los Angeles Times , ” Herman Cain accuser wants to talk, her lawyer says “: One of Herman Cain’s accusers wants to be heard. Her lawyer told the Washington Post on Tuesday that she is ready to tell her side of the ongoing saga involving allegations of sexual harassment while Cain was head of the National Restaurant Assn. in the late 1990s. But, the lawyer, Joel Bennett, said the woman remains bound by the confidentiality agreement she signed as part of a settlement of her claim with the association. “It is just frustrating that Herman Cain is going around bad-mouthing the two complainants, and my client is blocked by a confidentiality agreement,” Bennett told the Post. “The National Restaurant Assn. ought to release them and allow them to respond.” In an appearance Tuesday evening on Fox News Channel, Cain demurred when asked whether the woman should be given a chance to provide her version of events. “There are legal implications if the restaurant association waives that. I just found out about this today — there are legal implications” he said, adding that “we can’t answer that right now. It’s too soon.” Cain was asked on Fox whether he had breached the agreement by discussing the allegations publicly, thus freeing the woman to talk. He said he hadn’t because he had never identified the name of the one woman who’s complaint Cain says he recalls. At New York Times , ” Cain Accuser Got a Year’s Salary in Severance Pay .”

Herman Cain’s Accuser Speaks Out
Herman Cain’s drama regarding sexual harassment claims that have dominated political headlines over the past 24 hours doesn’t seem to be waning. Earlier today, NBC news said it confirmed that one woman did, indeed, receive a settlement from the National Restaurant Association after she complained about Cain’s alleged inappropriate conduct. NBC News, though, is not disclosing the name of the woman. Earlier today, Cain appeared on Fox News , where he claimed that the allegations were “false” and “baseless.” What’s most interesting is that Cain claims that he has no knowledge of any settlement monies. Here are his words on the matter : “Outside of the Restaurant Association, absolutely not. If the restaurant association did a settlement, I am not — I wasn’t even aware of it and I hope it wasn’t for much, because nothing happened. So if there was a settlement, it was handled by some of the other officers that worked for me at the association. So the answer is absolutely not.” If the NBC report is true and someone can prove that Cain was aware of the payout, his campaign — and his image — could take a major hit. Of course, it’s possible that he knew nothing about the settlement, as he has indicated. Below, see Cain discuss these issues at the National Press Club earlier today:

When Hollywood A-lister John Travolta phoned a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant to reserve a table, the employee on the receiving end of the call informed the actor that fast-food restaurants don’t accept reservations. “To me, customers are customers, no matter who they are,” the employee later told the Daily Mail. “It doesn’t make a difference if someone is famous.” Apparently this response wasn’t acceptable to KFC higher-ups who have since issued an apology : “In hindsight, of course, we would have reserved a table for him… It’s not every day you get a Hollywood star eating in your restaurant,” a spokesman says.

Warning, what you are about to see is disturbing. A security camera captured the daytime shooting of 18-year-old Tyquan Sewall, who was shot four times when a man exited a Brooklyn-area McDonald’s on Tuesday afternoon. The Daily Mail reports Sewall had gotten into an argument with the attacker and his friends earlier and was then lured to the restaurant. As the video shows, the gunman emerges from the front door and as the bullets fly, so does Sewall. He can be seen rolling into the street through two lanes of traffic, as people scramble and one person casually walks by him: The Daily Mail has more: The first bullet grazed the left side of the victim’s head, sending him staggering backwards. He was then hit three more times and sent rolling out into the street, passing through at least two lanes of traffic. Terrified onlookers fled in panic as the shots rang out outside the busy restaurant chain. The weapon used was a .32-caliber Smith & Wesson. The man who fired the gun was wearing a bright red jacket. Two of the men then ran over and snatched two white bags Mr Sewall had dropped onto the street before making off as police arrive. The shooting took place in Flatlands at around 3pm on Tuesday. The victim was hit in the chest, groin and leg and is now in a critical condition in hospital. Police are still looking for the shooter.
