On the front page, Editor-in-Chief of THE BLAZE Scott Baker has a post about a new book : “A Nation of Moochers.” The book takes a look at mooching in America in the  macro sense. But I took a look at mooching in the micro sense, meaning a few of our writers here. FireWire editor Mike Opelka told me that he’s a “recovering moocher” but added, “I give, too.” (P.S- Opelka had a lot more to say on this, which I’ll be writing in a follow-up post). “Moocher: no. Smoocher: yes,” BLAZE magazine editor Chris Field said. “I come from a small farming community where everybody works from the time they’re kids.” The Newt Gingrich American dream. I asked our business editor Becket Adams for an example of how he mooches. He said he catches the draft of semi trucks to “save on gas.” I asked if that was the only thing he did. “That’s not strictly illegal, that I’ll admit in public? Yes,” he said. Chris Santarelli , an assistant editor, is one of those people who refuses to buy their own french fries and instead nibbles on the ones his friends order. “I never buy fries, say I don’t like them, but always ask for one from a friend,” he told me. The worst. Buck Sexton , who writes on the front page, dismissed the idea of him mooching altogether. “I’m a WASP. We hate mooching,” he said. As for me, I work in media living in D.C. Events around the city are typically free for journalists, often with open-bars and free dinners. Hors d’oeuvrs, at the least. Mooching is almost forced on me.

From Phyllis Chesler, at Fox News, ” Will Guilty Verdict in Canadian ‘Honor Killing’ Trial Be a Turning Point for Justice? “: Western-style domestic violence and even domestically violent femicide is not the same as an honor killing. For example, Westerners rarely kill their young daughters nor do Western families of origin conspire or collaborate in such murders. While Sikhs, and Hindus, (mainly in India), do commit honor killings, the majority of such murders in the West (91%) are Muslim-on-Muslim crimes. The high-profile Shafia case may be a watershed decision in terms of Canada’s long standing Multiculturalism Policy which was passed in 1971 under Prime Minister Trudeau and legally enshrined in 1988 as the Canadian Multiculturalism Act. According to Dr. Salim Mansur, a Muslim Canadian professor and author, such policies are ultimately “racist.” They keep immigrants confined to their “group” and do not encourage members to become “individuals” and “citizens” of a modern liberal democracy. Although some have called for a special “honor killing” law, it is important to note that the Shafias were tried and convicted under existing Canadian law. They were not tried for committing a culturally approved “honor killing,” but for having conspired to commit a cold-blooded and pre-planned murder on Canadian soil. So, too, were Muslim-Canadian Aqsa Parvez’s father, Mohammed, and her brother, Waqas, who were tried and convicted for murdering the 16-year-old girl because she refused to wear the hijab and other traditional clothing. Her mother, who was not tried, lured her daughter home from a shelter for battered women to her death. After the Shafia jury was individually polled, (it was a unanimous decision and the evidence of guilt was overwhelming), the Justice, Robert Maranger said “It is hard to imagine a more heinous crime, a cold-blooded and shameful crime, (committed because of) a sick notion about honor that has no place in this society.” And in a statement following the verdict, Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson called honor killings a practice that is “barbaric and unacceptable in Canada….This government is committed to protecting women and other vulnerable persons from all forms of violence and to hold perpetrators accountable for their acts.” Defense lawyer David Crowe has vowed to appeal. The accused continue to insist they are innocent. I hope that Canadian and North American Muslim associations and experts will welcome this decision in which three murdered Muslim girls and one murdered Muslim woman were considered important enough to merit a long and expensive trial in the search for justice. Reactions to Guilty Verdicts in Canada ‘Honor Killing’ Trial

At Pirates Cove, ” 16 Concerned Scientists: Chill Out, No Need to Freak Over Anthropogenic Global Warming .” And following the links, see Wall Street Journal , ” No Need to Panic About Global Warming “: A candidate for public office in any contemporary democracy may have to consider what, if anything, to do about “global warming.” Candidates should understand that the oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true. In fact, a large and growing number of distinguished scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are needed. In September, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ivar Giaever, a supporter of President Obama in the last election, publicly resigned from the American Physical Society (APS) with a letter that begins: “I did not renew [my membership] because I cannot live with the [APS policy] statement: ‘The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.’ In the APS it is OK to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible?” In spite of a multidecade international campaign to enforce the message that increasing amounts of the “pollutant” carbon dioxide will destroy civilization, large numbers of scientists, many very prominent, share the opinions of Dr. Giaever. And the number of scientific “heretics” is growing with each passing year. The reason is a collection of stubborn scientific facts. Continue reading .

Evidence Does Not Support Catastrophic Man-Made Global Warming

Longtime PBS news commentator Bill Moyers said Friday that billionaire George Soros has “been the victim, of course, of Glenn Beck and the right-wing, the Fox News assassins.” Moyers made his comments in a discussion with Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington, during which he praised Soros, whom Moyers also said is “deeply troubled by the Orwellian power of the right-wing in this country today.” Transcript below, via Newsbusters : BILL MOYERS: I’ll tell you somebody you could, you should go for, because he has given more thought to this than almost anyone I know: George Soros, believe it or not. George Soros, whatever you think about his wealth or his politics, George Soros was next to Vaclav Havel I think the most catalytic agent for helping to bring down the Communist government behind the Iron Curtain because he, he gave everybody who wanted one an equivalent of a Xerox machine, and so they could get the message out. And he is deeply troubled by the Orwellian power of the right-wing in this country today. He talks about it. I was on his board for a several years, and I’m off now that I’m back on the air, but I was on his board, and he is deeply troubled. He is a great devotee of the open society, the society that does change because it listens to itself, and learns from its experience. He’s been the victim, of course, of Glenn Beck and the right-wing, the Fox News assassins. So he’s thought a great deal about the Orwellian idea, and he said it has arrived in this country. It is here, part of the permanent, a permanent characteristic of American democracy which is therefore self-suicidally bent because of the power and force of propaganda. He’d be somebody I know would write you a really good piece for that. (h/t Newsbusters )

PBS Commentator Bill Moyers: George Soros Has Been the ‘Victim’ of Glenn Beck and Fox News ‘Assassins’

She’s a progressive La Raza racist. At The Blaze, ” Former La Raza VP Named White House Domestic Policy Director .” And from Aaron Klein, ” Look who Obama’s new czar is tied to… Cecilia Munoz previously worked with infamous list “: Prior to her appointment yesterday as the next director of President Obama’s Domestic Policy Council, longtime immigration reform advocate Cecilia Muñoz served on the board of George Soros’ Open Society Institute. Muñoz also chaired the board of directors of the Center for Community Change, or CCC, a Soros-funded community organizing initiative whose board boasts activists from ACORN, MoveOn.org as well as other notorious radical groups. Muñoz is currently serving as the head of the White House office of intergovernmental affairs. She most recently worked for the National Council of la Raza, an open-borders group that lobbies for mass immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens. The official White House statement announcing her new appointment yesterday noted Muñoz’s previous work for both the CCC and Soros’ Institute. “Ms. Muñoz is the former Chair of the Board of Center for Community Change, and served on the U.S. Programs Board of the Open Society Institute,” the statement read. “Over the past three years, Cecilia has been a trusted advisor who has demonstrated sound judgment day in and day out,” Obama in the press release. “Cecilia has done an extraordinary job working on behalf of middle class families, and I’m confident she’ll bring the same unwavering dedication to her new position.” Muñoz’s new duties will include coordinating the policy-making process and supervise the execution of domestic policy in the White House. While the White House release documented Muñoz’s work for the CCC, the statement did not further define the CCC, which recruits and trains activists to spearhead “political issue campaigns” while advocating for more citizen involvement in community organizations. And at Knuckledraggin’ : And La Raza is involved in actively seeking reconquista. That and flat-out open borders, among other things. I swear to God above, that fucking socialist son of a bitch isn’t happy just letting them in, now he wants to give our Nation to the Mexicans and let them turn it into the shithole Mexico is. Heightened Attention to Santorum in Iowa

On December 30, 2011, in Uncategorized, by TiredOfIt

At Telegraph UK , ” Santorum surges as candidates campaign in Iowa .” And from Nate Silver, at New York Times , ” The Santorum Surge In Iowa and Beyond ” (via Memeorandum ). Silver’s got a big old model based on a “momentum bonus” and good timing, but others have been saying that Santorum’s ill prepared to compete beyond Iowa, lacking organization in particular. Robert Stacy McCain sure likes him though. See, ” IOWA NOTEBOOK: Occupy Caucuses? ” See more at The Hill , ” Top Santorum supporter says he can win Iowa caucus .”

This bone was once believed to be a yeti finger. (Photo via Daily Mail)

Nepalese monks long believed this finger, said to be from a yeti, was a talisman against bad luck , according to the Daily Mail. In a dramatic tale of how the finger was almost stolen and then reluctantly given to an American, the true identity of the of the finger has been reveled by DNA analysis more than 50 years since it was taken from the monastery. The answer, as you might expect, is anticlimactic. It’s a human finger. The Daily Mail reports that Irish-American explorer Peter Byrne had been searching for evidence of yetis in the 1950s and heard of a rumor of a preserved hand in the Pangboche Monastery. When he trekked to the monastery in Nepal he was told by the monks, as would be expected, that he couldn’t have it. What transpired next, involved Byrne considering stealing a finger off the hand, at the request of American Tom Slick who was financing his endeavor and wanted to analyze the bone and replacing it with a human finger. Luckily, the monks eventually agree to part with a finger but Bryne still had to attach the human finger and make it look real: Byrne returned to the monastery, and although the monks were reluctant, they eventually agreed to part with the finger for £100 — only if Byrne could find a way of disguising the missing digit. The mountaineer wired the human finger on to the relic, before painting it with iodine to make it look the same colour as the rest of the hand. He now faced a perilous journey home. In the previous year, the Nepalese government — bizarrely — had brought in a law making it illegal for foreigners to kill a Yeti. Watch the Huffington Post report for more: The finger was brought back to London with help from movie star Jimmy Stewart from “It’s a Wonderful Life” and his wife who hid it in her luggage to get it through customs. It was given to a primatologist Professor William Osman Hill who analyzed it and determined that it was not human. From there, the case was closed and the finger was stored at the Royal College of Surgeons museum in London. That was until it was rediscovered and analyzed by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. A BBC program announced the results . BBC has more from the society: Dr. Rob Ogden, of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said: “We had to stitch it together. We had several fragments that we put into one big sequence and then we matched that against the database and we found human DNA. “So it wasn’t too surprising but it was obviously slightly disappointing that you hadn’t discovered something brand new. “Human was what we were expecting and human is what we got.” Primatologist Ian Redmond said: “From what we know of accounts of Yetis, I would have expected a more robust and longer finger and possibly with some hair on the back. “If one had just found it without the story attached to it, I think you would think it was a human finger.

Even though it was found to be human, the Daily Mail reports that some are hoping the digit can be returned to its rightful owner, the monastery. Earlier this year we reported a group of Siberian scientists reported they were 95 percent sure evidence supported the existence of yetis.

Well, there you go. Is that strange, or what? When I was a kid growing up in Orange County, folks attacked my home turf as the stronghold of the “racist” John Birch Society. When it was announced that the Society was a sponsor of the 2010 meeting of CPAC, progressives had a field day bashing conservatives as unreconstructed white supremacists. There’s a bad reputation there that’s not going away, despite the organization’s best efforts to come out from the cold. See the New York Times , ” Holding Firm Against Plots by Evildoers .” That’s why it’s revealing that Congressman Ron Paul decided it was perfectly fine to speak at the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in September. That’s not the first time Paul has spoken at the Society’s events, and his questionable ties to the group, obviously, haven’t had a noticeably negative impact on his political fortunes. Perhaps that will change with Paul still leading in the Iowa polls . Jamie Kirchick focused explicitly on Paul’s ties to the Birchers the other day: ” Why Don’t Libertarians Care About Ron Paul’s Bigoted Newsletters? ” And just out is this devastating indictment of Ron Paul at Bleeding Heart Libertarians, ” How Did We Get Here? Or, Why Do 20 Year Old Newsletters Matter So Damn Much? ” (via Memeorandum

Politically Aware Songs Go Missing in 2000s?

On December 25, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Barry Munz

So say Reed Johnson and Deborah Vankin, at the Los Angeles Times , ” For politically aware songs, the ’00s were all for naught “: The ’60s gave us “Blowin’ in the Wind,” folk-poet Bob Dylan’s challenge to the brutal status quo. The ’70s served up Neil Young’s “Ohio,” an anthem of generational rage against the military-industrial machine. The ’80s laid down “The Message,” Grandmaster Flash’s hip-hop jeremiad about the vicious cycle of race-based poverty. The ’90s broke loose with Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade,” a rap-rock rant targeting corporate greed and cultural imperialism. And the ’00s? It’s produced some memorably sardonic screeds (Green Day’s “American Idiot”), patriotic hell-yeah’s out of Nashville like Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American),” and dirges of quiet desperation emanating from “The Suburbs,” courtesy of Arcade Fire. But much of the music that has topped the Billboard charts in the new millennium — Britney, Lil Wayne, Lady Gaga — might suggest that America has been one big party since 2001, despite the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, two major wars, a wobbly economy and a bitterly divided government. Likewise, the recent popular manifestations of that unrest, the tea party and Occupy Wall Street movements, so far seem to have been largely lost on popular music. That has left some artists, music industry professionals and listeners pondering how well today’s music is serving the restless masses and capturing the essence of times that indeed are a-changin’. Look, not everyone can be the Bob Dylan of the age, but I’m not buying the lack of “politically aware” songs for an entire decade. And the authors are mostly shilling for #OWS, which is too bad, since it’s a really lame movement. Besides, Keith Morris is still jamming. Amazing that the Los Angeles Times overlooked Off! in their own backyard: Your high social caste Privileged friends You lure me in But I can’t be your friend Hit on Miss Liberty Under the cherry tree Drunk on hypocrisy I’m standing in the shadows And I’m pissing in the punchbowl I don’t belong Cocktail party Pin the tail on the donkey Icing on my face But I don’t like the taste Right wing mentality God and democracy Red carpet royalty I’m standing in the shadows And I’m pissing in the punchbowl I don’t belong

ContributorNetwork – COMMENTARY | Criticism of the White House Christmas Card by Sarah Palin and Fox News at first made me laugh, except it’s not really funny. It’s a symptom of all that is wrong in our politics and our society these days, with such utter lack of civility and with quests to criticize President Barack Obama for everything possible.
