Study Says Women Better at Parking Than Men: Let the Discussion Begin
If you’re flying this holiday season, it’s very likely you’ll hear “Excuse me, madame (or sir), please turn off that device.” But a new investigation suggests that you shouldn’t grumble while powering down or ignore the rule as it really could interfere with cockpit equipment. With American Airlines recently getting the green light to use iPads during takeoff and landing, passengers have more and more been questioning if it’s necessary to power down. An investigative study conducted by USA Today says yes. Yes, it is still necessary. USA Today evaluated “25 papers by electronics experts; presentations, papers and advisories by government aviation officials in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe; congressional testimony; and Boeing research and information for airlines.” The investigation also found a significant number of people disobeying the rule. USA Today has more: “Any device with a battery — including cellphones, e-readers, laptops, PDAs (personal digital assistants) and Game Boys — has some level of emission that has the potential to interfere with cockpit instruments or navigational equipment,” says Boeing engineer Dave Carson. Carson says most devices used “in aggregate or independently” by passengers would not meet the RTCA’s DO-160 standard, which sets emission standards for airborne equipment. At the same time, USA Today reports some electronics experts as saying they are not concerned over the level of electromagnetic interference emitted. Here are some of USA Today’s findings from document review: In a March 2001 service letter to airlines, Boeing said it received “various reports of anomalies in airplane communication and navigation systems that operators suspected were caused by interference from passenger carry-on electronic devices.” USA TODAY’s analysis of NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System, which lets airline employees report incidents confidentially, reveals that pilots and an air traffic controller reported 32 incidents of electronic device interference with aircraft systems from January 2001 through Dec. 2, 2011. A pilot of a Canadair CRJ-200 regional jet reported compass system malfunctions after takeoff at an altitude of about 9,000 feet on a flight last May. The pilot says a passenger had an iPhone in standby mode; when the phone was turned off, the compass system operated properly. Here’s a Fox 40 news report on the study: Fox 40 reports Ernesto Martinez, a pilot himself who has used an iPad in the his cockpit personally, as saying that if a large number of people were using their electronics on the plane the interference could effect the cockpit. “Just turn it off, because you are really putting your life at risk,” Martinez said according to Fox 40. Does Electronic Device Use During Takeoff and Landing Really Matter?
Nearly 3,000 so-called “honor attacks” were reported in the United Kingdom in 2010, up 47 percent from the year before, new statistics show. The Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organization said 2,823 attacks were reported last year, according to data the group collected from 39 out of 52 U.K. police agencies. According to the Guardian , honor attacks are defined as crimes planned and carried out by a family or community in order to defend their perceived “honor,” usually against a Muslim woman, and can include threats, abduction, acid attacks, beatings, forced marriage, mutilation and murder. Any number of “offenses” can be considered dishonorable, including having a boyfriend, being the victim of rape, refusing an arranged marriage, being gay or even wearing make up or inappropriate dress, Diana Nammi of the IKWRO told the Telegraph . The highest increase in violence took place in London, according to the organization, where incidents rose from 235 to 495. Still, the IKWRO said the 2,823 reported attacks likely don’t represent the full number of attacks that took place: Victims can remain silent out of fear of retaliation, the group said, and also estimated another 500 attacks or so took place where the police forces involved were those that did not provide data. Fionnuala Ni Mhurchu of the IKWRO told the Guardian she attributed the sharp increase partly to better police awareness and more victims coming forward in the wake of high-profile prosecutions of honor attacks, but also said the violence itself is increasing as more young people refuse to bow to their families’ demands. “They’re resisting abuses of their human rights such as forced marriage more and more,” she told the Guardian. “And as a result they’re being subjected to this kind of violence. We hear from the community that this violence is on the increase.” “These figures are important because they demonstrate this is not a minor problem – it is a serious issue affecting thousands of people a year, many of whom will suffer high levels of abuse before they seek help,” she continued. “We want the government to develop a national strategy on honour-based violence that covers not just policing but also issues such as education and community cohesion.” This was the first large-scale collection of honor-based violence data in the U.K.; previously, officials had cited a “12 honor killings per year” statistics, though its origins were unclear, according to the Guardian. According to the Telegraph, London woman Banaz Mahmod was the victim of an honor killing in 2006: The 20-year-old Iraqi Kurd was strangled on the orders of her father and uncle because they thought her boyfriend was not suitable for her. Her two male cousins, both 28, were sentenced to jail last year for a minimum of 22 and 21 years for her killing. Her father and uncle were both jailed for life in 2007. Her case changed the way London police investigate honor killings.

At LAT , ” Adele prognosis after vocal cord surgery is good, her doctor says “: The latest update on the singer Adele, who recently underwent microsurgery for a benign polyp on her vocal cords, is good. A statement released from Massachusetts General Hospital, where the singer had surgery, says her prognosis is optimistic: “Adele underwent vocal cord microsurgery by Dr. Steven Zeitels to stop recurrent vocal cord hemorrhage (bleeding) from a benign polyp. This condition is typically the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture. Based on the advice of her doctor and voice therapist in the United Kingdom, Adele came to Boston to consult and undergo corrective voice surgery with Dr. Zeitels, the Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center. … Dr. Zeitels expects Adele to make a full recovery from her laser microsurgery.” And Tania has the video, and some kind words :

While the Kamp Alinsky Kids were taunting police officers across the country on Friday night, the Obama-Biden 2012 campaign quietly released its list of the elite deep-pocketed donors who bundled at least $20 million for the White House. I’m publishing the full list below. Some 41 bundlers bagged more than $500,000 each for Mr. Obama this year. That’s a substantial increase over the 27 who met that threshold last quarter. The Washington Times broke down geographically where a big chunk of the money came from: Eighty-five bundlers live in California; 41 are from New York City; 27 are from Chicago; and 16 are in Washington, D.C. Add this to my pre-existing compilation of ultra-rich Americans who are off-limits to the Obama-backed occupiers . Should doctors be penalized for sharing their faith with patients? This is the question that many are pondering following a doctor’s reprimand by the General Medical Council (the governing body that regulates medical professionals practicing in the United Kingdom). Dr. Richard Scott, a family physician with an impeccable record, was chastised for speaking to a patient about God. Now, he fears losing his job as a result of the incident. The Telegraph has more : The committed Christian, was accused of “harassment” and told by the medical regulator that he risked bringing the profession into disrepute by discussing his religious beliefs. The Cambridge-educated doctor has refused to accept a formal warning on his record, and is instead taking legal action to fight the censure. His case follows a series of high-profile disputes between Christians and their employers over their freedom to express their beliefs, including an electrician who displayed a cross in his van and a nurse who prayed for a patient. Scott claims that he was within his bounds when speaking with the patient and that the conversation was, “…a consensual discussion between two adults.” By his own account, he asked permission before speaking to the patient and stopped discussing his faith when he was asked to. Scott is determined to clear his name. Below, watch him discuss the matter in detail. What do you think? Should he be held accountable for sharing his faith?

USA today : A massive attack that’s trying to scare computer users into visiting a bogus antivirus site has infected more than 1.5 million websites and continues to spread, according to an Internet security firm. Several pages on Apple’s iTunes store have been infected. The so-called LizaMoon “SQL injection attack” began Tuesday and is being tracked by Websense. Such attacks redirect users by exploiting programming errors and poorly written code and scripts. eWeek says the attack is “out of control … with no end in sight.” Nearly half the compromised sites are in the United States. Other affected countries include United Kingdom, Kuwait, India, Australia, Turkey, Brazil, Israel, Mexico, Taiwan and Chile. VentureBeat writes that the attack “shows that malware is a bigger menace than ever and that many web sites aren’t protected.” All Things Digital explains what the hack does: The hack seeks to trick Web users into believing that their computer has been compromised by viruses and prompts them to download fake security software that itself causes further problems. Among the sites serving up the links to the fake software sites are some belonging to Apple and used on its iTunes store, though Apple is said to have cleaned up the affected code on its site. Websense says that so far it appears that sites using Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005 are at risk, though as yet SQL Server 2008 doesn’t appear to be affected. No word yet from Microsoft about any of this, though I’ve asked them for a comment. Microsoft did end up commenting : Microsoft is aware of reports of an ongoing SQL injection attack. Our investigation has determined these sites were exploited using a vulnerability in certain third-party content management systems. This is not a Microsoft vulnerability Via Computer Weekly is a video explaining the LizaMoon injection:

‘No End in Sight’: Malicious Web Attack Hits Million+ Sites, Still Spreading
The White House moved quickly Thursday to distance itself from National Intelligence Director James Clapper’s latest controversial comments involving Libya, China and Russia. Speaking to a congressional committee early Thursday, Clapper asserted that “over the long term … the [Gaddafi] regime will previal” in Libya, a message which directly conflicts with the administration’s pro-rebel messages to date: In addition, Clapper, the nation’s top intelligence official, went on to describe both China and Russia as “mortal [threats]” to American security as Vice President Joe Biden simultaneously met with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Moscow: National Security Adviser Tom Donilon told reporters on a conference call Thursday that he still has confidence in Clapper, but admitted Clapper’s conclusion about Libya reflected “a static and one-dimensional assessment.” Administration analysts have “come to various conclusions about the various advantages that the Qadhafy regime has … and [what] opposition has,” Donilon said. In a more “multi-dimensional” view of the situation unfolding in Libya, the White House believes pro-democracy rebels are still strong and worth supporting as potential allies. Reflecting on Clapper’s comments on Russia and China, Donilon added: “Gen. Clapper was presenting a kind of a flat-out resources analysis in terms of their regime. He went through the kind of equipment and resources that the regime has. … I’m talking about looking to the future here.” Still, he concluded: “I don’t think that’s the most informative analysis, quite frankly.” Clapper has come under fire in the past for public gaffes. Last month, Clapper’s office tried to walk back his assertion that the Muslim Brotherhood is a “largely secular” organization: In addition, Clapper raised eyebrows last December after admitting to ABC News’ Diane Sawyer that he knew nothing about recent terror arrests made in the United Kingdom: Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told Fox News Thursday that it may be time for Clapper to resign or be fired as Director of National Intelligence. President Obama should “repudiate” today’s “third strike,” Graham said. “Three strikes and you’re out.” Graham added that Clapper has a “lack of situational awareness” and was sending the wrong message to Gaddafi and the people of Libya Thursday. He should know better, Graham concluded. Meanwhile, at the White House, press secretary Jay Carney insisted that Clapper maintains Obama’s full support.
