PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A treasure hunter said he has located the wreck of a British merchant ship that was torpedoed by a German U-boat off Cape Cod during World War II while carrying what he claims was a load of platinum bars now worth more than $3 billion. If the claim proves true, it could be one of the richest sunken treasures ever discovered. Check out this account of the potential discovery: But an attorney for the British government expressed doubt the vessel was carrying platinum. And if it was, in fact, laden with precious metals, who owns the hoard could become a matter of international dispute. Treasure hunter Greg Brooks of Sub Sea Research in Gorham, Maine, announced that a wreck found sitting in 700 feet of water 50 miles offshore is that of the S.S. Port Nicholson, sunk in 1942. He said Wednesday that he and his crew identified it via the hull number using an underwater camera, and he hopes to begin raising the treasure later this month or in early March with the help of a remotely operated underwater vessel.

Brooks describes in the video that you can read the letters of the ship's name but marine life makes it awfully hard to see.

“I’m going to get it, one way or another, even if I have to lift the ship out of the water,” Brooks said. The claim should be viewed with skepticism, said Robert F. Marx, an underwater archaeologist, maritime historian and owner of Seven Seas Search and Salvage LLC in Florida. Both an American company and an English company previously went after the contents of the ship years ago and surely retrieved at least a portion, Marx said. The question is how much, if any, platinum is left, he said. “Every wreck that is lost is the richest wreck lost. Every wreck ever found is the biggest ever found. Every recovery is the biggest ever recovery,” Marx said. Brooks said the Port Nicholson was headed for New York with 71 tons of platinum valued at the time at about $53 million when it was sunk in an attack that left six people dead. The platinum was a payment from the Soviet Union to the U.S. for war supplies, Brooks said. The vessel was also carrying gold bullion and diamonds, he said. Brooks said he located the wreck in 2008 using shipboard sonar but held off announcing the find while he and his business partners obtained salvage rights from a federal judge. Salvage rights are not the same as ownership rights, which are still unsettled. Britain will wait until salvage operations begin before deciding whether to file a claim on the cargo, said Timothy Shusta, an attorney in Tampa, Fla., who represents the British government. He said it is unclear if the ship was even carrying any platinum.

Brooks found boxes in the ship that an underwater robot was unable to move, showing they were heavy and suggesting they could hold the gold.

“We’re still researching what was on the vessel,” he said. “Our initial research indicated it was mostly machinery and military stores.” The U.S. government has not weighed in on the court case yet, and Brooks said he doubts that will happen, since the Soviets eventually reimbursed Washington for the lost payment. A U.S. Treasury Department ledger shows that the platinum bars were on board, Brooks said, and his underwater video footage shows a platinum bar surrounded by 30 boxes that he believes hold four to five platinum ingots each. But he has yet to bring up any platinum, saying his underwater vessel needs to retrofitted to attach lines to the boxes, which would then be hoisted to the surface by winch. “Of course there are skeptics,” he said. “There’s skeptics on everything you do.” Maritime law is complicated, and there could be multiple claims on the ship’s contents. After the sinking of the HMS Edinburgh, an English warship carrying Soviet gold bullion as a payment to the allies during World War II, England, the U.S. and the Soviet Union had claims on the sunken treasure, Marx said. A consortium that owned the salvage vessel was given 10 percent of the prize, while the rest was shared by the other parties, he said. In other big finds, treasure hunter Mel Fisher made international headlines in 1985 when he discovered a $450 million mother lode of precious metals and gemstones from a Spanish galleon that went down off Florida in 1622. In another case, a Tampa exploration company has been ordered by the courts to return $500 million worth of treasure from a Spanish warship to Spain. The ship was sunk by the British navy during a battle off Portugal in 1804. [H/T Business Insider ]

In some Florida neighborhoods, there’s a new sheriff in town. And this one looks like a cross between an RV and an Armored Personnel Carrier. It’s called “the peacemaker,” and it’s basically a tricked out police surveillance van. “Whatcha gonna do when we come for you?” is written in block letters on its exterior. A worthwhile question, it would seem, and one that many Florida residents are asking with mixed emotions. The “Peacemaker” truck is a new tool in the Fort Lauderdale Police Department struggle against drug dealing and other pervasive neighborhood crimes. As the Sun Sentinel  writes it is: “Mixing high tech with simplicity, the in-your-face strategy is straightforward: load an out-of-service armored truck with some of the latest surveillance equipment available and decorate it with police emblems. Then, simply leave it parked in front of trouble spots.” This video clip, courtesy of the Sun Sentinel , gives an overview of the Peacemaker: Fort Lauderdale police bought the first of their two Peacemakers from the Brinks company for $10 to take a discontinued armored bank truck off their hands. Cops retrofitted the vehicle with cameras that can stream live digital video feeds back to headquarters.  And with its cameras facing in all directions, the surveillance wagon can compile footage for up to 700 hours. “Make no mistakes about it,” Detective Travis Mandell told the Sun Sentinel . “We want people to know that we are watching the bad guys.” Of course, many are already asking the question: just whom do the police consider “bad guys,” and does everyone’s sense of privacy have to disappear in order to keep a lid on petty crimes? A new video released by the Republican National Committee takes aim at the President in Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s home state of Florida, using the Democratic National Committee Chairwoman’s 2008 words against her party’s leader and US President. The video entitled “Not Up To The Job,” notes Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s strong support of then candidate Barack Obama’s chief rival in the 2008 Democratic primary; Hillary Clinton. Over chants of “Hil-la-ry” the video cuts between stats of the unemployment rate in Florida over the Obama presidency, new foreclosure filings in the state over the last four years, and the thousands of Florida residents currently living in poverty. “In 2008, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz knew Obama wasn’t up to the job… Four leaders we all do. Change Direction, Donate at GOP.com,” the ad displays. Since Rep. Wasserman Schultz assumed the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee in 2011, she has been one of the President’s most visible and vocal public defenders.  Florida is expected to once again be a key swing state in the general election, and the video has been released just one day before the Sunshine State’s GOP primary.

I posted on this previously, and now here’s the video: And see also Mark Levin, ” Character Matters and Romney’s Worries Me “: I am beginning to think that the nature and level of attacks being launched by Mitt Romney against Newt Gingrich, which he would surely use against any conservative threatening his nomination, are going to make it very difficult for Romney to unite the different factions of the GOP and the conservative movement behind his candidacy should he win the nomination.

or will he disavow what this lady is saying? Thanx to Jim Hoft for the video. Jim Robinson: Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi who’s fighting to repeal ObamaCare appeared on Greta, tonight, defending RomneyCare. She says Romney’s health care plan is not the same as ObamaCare and, in fact, Romney’s plan reduces costs. She goes on

Times are hard and any kind of money can help. THE BLAZE’s science and technology editor Liz Klimas posted a video this morning of Syracuse student Sam Morrison who did one back flip a day for $100 as part of a bet with his dad. Watch the video here . Klimas told me it’s not a bet she’d do personally, mostly because she can’t actually do a backflip. “I can’t even do a cartwheel. Ever,” she said. “I’ve tried, people have tried to coach me in my younger years…nothing. I can’t even do a back dive into a pool — it’s a back flop.” Poor Liz. She blames her lack of acrobatic skill on her height. “What it comes down to is the jump, I think. You have to jump high enough to give yourself enough room to launch backward. I don’t have much jump for being tall for a girl,” she said. Klimas says she’s 5’8″. I asked if she’d at least try to do a backflip every day for a year for $100. She said no because her “hospital bills would far exceed” $100 after she lands on her face. Darn. DISCLAIMER: As a full-time editor for THE BLAZE, Liz does have health insurance. But it’s probably not a good idea she try backflipping anyway. We try to promote a safe working environment. Follow Klimas on Twitter @lizklimas .

**Written by Doug Powers In December, Nancy Pelosi was bragging about having dirt on Newt Gingrich . Shortly after that, she backed off . As evidenced by an appearance with CNN’s John King, Pelosi wants to once again play the “inside information” game and can’t contain herself : Pelosi: “He’s not going to be President of the United States. That’s not going to happen. Let me just make my prediction and stand by it, it isn’t going to happen.” King: “Why are you so sure?” Pelosi: “There is something I know. The Republicans, if they choose to nominate him that’s their prerogative. I don’t even think that’s going to happen.” Geez… did something happen on the global warming couch that we don’t yet know about? You have to watch the video to capture the full glory of Pelosi’s giddy, sophomoric attitude. She behaves like a high schooler who found the letterman jacket of the opposing school’s quarterback in the back seat of the car of the girl who beat her out for homecoming queen — and is dying to tell somebody about it just before the game. As we’ve noted, not everyone is a fan of 22-year-old Jefferson Bethke’s “Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus.” In addition to going viral, the spoken word artist’s now infamous clip has spawned a plethora of responses. Among the flurry of videos offering rebuttal to Bethke’s anti-organized religion commentary comes one from Fr. Claude Burns, a Catholic priest at Holy Spirit Church in Evansville, Indiana. Burns, whose stage name is Fr. Pontifex, is a rapper who has taken the Catholic hip-hop world by storm (yes, there is, in fact, a Catholic hip-hop genre). ( Related: ‘Hate Religion, But Love Jesus’ Creator Jefferson Bethke Discusses Controversial Viral Video on GBTV ) Fr. Pontifex’s response to Bethke is called “Why I love Religion, And Love Jesus,” as it delves into the reasons why holding reverence for both religious structures and the individual who is central to Christianity is, in his view, possible. Rather than opening with a frame that reads “Jesus > Religion,” as Bethke did, Fr. Pontifex’s video reads “Jesus

We already showed you the first bad-weather driving video of the year last week, where drivers in Seattle couldn’t seem to figure out how to navigate a snowy road. There were no accidents in that one. But the one you’re about to see — the second viral bad-weather driving video of the year — has several. A Utah man captured several cars unsuccessfully trying to drive down a local road. And when snow, icy roads, and cars mix, the result is a cringe-worthy video. “It went from focusing on the snow falling to focusing on people sliding down the hill,” Rhee Braby told KSL-TV . “This is how it is the first hour of every snowstorm until the plows get here.” Here’s what the video description says: the video starts out slow but picks up, there are 3 curb hits, 1 360, about 6 accidents,3 cars in yards, and lots of cars out of control. Utah snow storm This is how KSL describes it: Another car did a 360. Moments later, a driver lost control, drove into a vacant lot and hit a tree. One pickup is seen driving too fast down 400 North. “He’s got some speed,” says Brady as he shooting the video. The driver almost made it down the hill but hit a curb and lost a hubcap. Another car drove off the road, ended up in the bushes and had to be towed out. See for yourself:
