NY Times’ Paul Krugman Calls For End to New Civility…
Fine with me, it’s not like the left ever acts civil to begin with. (NY Times – Paul Krugman) Last week, President Obama offered a spirited defense of his party’s values — in effect, of the legacy of the New Deal and the Great Society. Immediately thereafter, as always happens when Democrats take a stand, the civility police came out in force. The president, we were told, was being too partisan; he needs to treat his opponents with respect; he should have lunch with them, and work out a consensus. …Which brings me to those calls for a bipartisan solution. Sorry to be cynical, but right now “bipartisan” is usually code for assembling some conservative Democrats and ultraconservative Republicans — all of them with close ties to the wealthy, and many who are wealthy themselves — and having them proclaim that low taxes on high incomes and drastic cuts in social insurance are the only possible solution. This would be a corrupt, undemocratic way to make decisions about the shape of our society even if those involved really were wise men with a deep grasp of the issues. It’s much worse when many of those at the table are the sort of people who solicit and believe the kind of policy analyses that the Heritage Foundation supplies. So let’s not be civil . Instead, let’s have a frank discussion of our differences. In particular, if Democrats believe that Republicans are talking cruel nonsense, they should say so — and take their case to the voters. And after the Giffords shooting Krugman was one of the first to blame it on “right-wing rhetoric.”

Egypt: Thousands of Fundamentalist Muslims Protest Appointment of Christian Governor…
The rise of Salafist Islam continues to gain strength. Cairo (DPA) — Thousands of conservative Muslims protested in the southern Egyptian province of Qina Friday against the appointment of a new Christian governor. Witnesses said the protesters, mostly observers of the conservative Islamic Salafist movement, threatened to bar Emad Mikhail, the new governor, from entering the province. The previous governor, whom Mikhail will replace, was also Christian. Qina has seen sectarian strife in the past. Late last year, dozens of Christians and Muslims were arrested in the province after nearly a dozen homes were burnt in clashes between members of the two religions. Residents said fighting erupted last year when it was discovered that a Coptic Christian man was dating a Muslim woman from the same southern town.

(Politico) – The White House has not piped up about Donald Trump yet, but Vice President Joe Biden’s daughter Ashley had some choice words for The Donald on her Facebook page Thursday night — saying the developer “makes me ill” and “bring it on!” The Facebook missive by Ashley Biden, who is in her late 20s, came after another day of Trump dominating cable news shows with talk about President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. It’s an online outburst that was unlikely to have been sanctioned by the White House. POLITICO viewed the posts on page, which is under the name Ashley Blazer, her middle name. Roughly a dozen people “liked” the post about Trump by early evening, and Ashley Biden added to her own initial post. “This discussion or debate over whether or not President Obama has an American birth certificate is just so insulting!,” she said. “Boycotting the Apprentice!” she added later. A Biden spokeswoman declined to comment Thursday night.

(ANI) – The new law proposed by the Afghanistan Government that bans women garments contrary to Islamic sharia has outraged the general public and human right activists. The Government has planned to close down the shops dealing with outfits that are semi-naked, naked, transparent, or tight in a way that reveals part of the woman’s body. The new law also bans large parties in the wedding halls. It says that wedding guests will be limited to 300 and selections of food will be regulated by local government officials to ensure no more than 5 dollar is spent per person. The government is also planning to set up ‘committees’ to monitor weddings. The groups including representatives of the Religious Affairs Ministry, will be expected to patrol private wedding ceremonies taking place in wedding halls of Kabul, The Guardian reports. Their duty also includes ensuring male and female guests do not mix in same rooms, which is already a standard practice in most Afghan weddings. “This is pointless because the mullahs will not be happy unless the women are wearing burqas,” “It is all because of pressure from the Taliban,” said a shopkeeper Muhiuddin Alizada, as he was shocked due to the new restrictions.
